>>211686709Actually true. This is the true casualty of the hollywood bubble. Too many filmmakers/writers are swayed by what their idiot friends/contemporaries are saying at dumbass parties. It's why you end up with shit like TLJ.
>>211687086Half true.
The audience knows it wants the same but different. That's all any audience has ever wanted since media boomed.
But exposing the audience to things it didn't realise it wanted can make them realise that there are other interesting things. And it can help art grow. However, the hollywood circle jerk is less focused on pushing the medium forward and more focused on proving to the audience (and their friends) how smart they are.
Choreography is the best example. Hollywood fights have been terrible for decades. It's especially frustrating since The Raid came out over a decade ago and was almost perfect in that regard.
But what makes it astonishing is that if you watch the behind the scenes, the choreography is actually often quite impressive. It looks terrible because they focus on flashy moves that wouldn't work, filmed with stupid jump cuts. In the filmmakers' minds, as long as they have a decent choreographer on board (which they normally do), they're doing their job right. They have no comprehension on ideas like less is more, or that audiences are more affected by things that feel believable. Perfect example of this is The Fall Guy. Choreography is impressive as hell on a technical level. On a visual level, it looks bland. And it's not especially engaging.
They wasted all that money on practical effects that look just as terrible as your average cgi capeshit slop because they didn't think about what they were actually trying to tell the audience in the context of the film and were just focused on impressing their friends.
