I started rewatching this last night and it wasn't nearly as good as I remember it being. Even the beginning is insanely unrealistic, with him passing notes back and forth with 1 bank teller while everybody else completely ignores the situation. Also, the way he snuck his "brother" out of the hospital, despite the bed alarm going off which would obviously attract any medical personnel, was ridiculous. Jennifer Leigh playing a total manchild at 40 years old was also odd as fuck. The instant meltdowns in public spaces would only be believable if she was someone who escaped a mental institution.
There's no way to maintain tension in such silly scenarios.
Safdie and Pattinson are great actors but this just is not a good movie. Uncut Gems is far superior.
>>211691152>>211691208Modern posters are so fucking ugly.
>>211691208Uncut Gems ain't shit, a 3/5 at best.
>>211691267I'll have to rewatch it, but I remember the whole thing felt much more grounded. What would you consider some superior thrillers? I could definitely use a recommendation.
>>211691208>Uncut Gems is far superior. There's no meaningful difference between the two. Superior/inferior regarding the same action film. Really, the John Wick films are "Superior" to both in terms of pure action and logic, as are the Cruise films.
Your critiques are just believability of plot and relatability to plot, when there is a claustrophobic atmosphere to both that garners merit.
>>211688284Unironically what's wrong with his picks other than being a bit entry level?
>>211690653 (OP)>What film have you changed opinion on the most since your first viewing?Johnny Guitar. Watched it as a bit of an avant-teen after seeing it mentioned in Pierrot le Fou to basically no effect. Rewatched after becoming less insufferable and loved it.
>>211691350Claustrophobia goes out the window when the scenarios are unrealistic. All the air goes out the room. How do you feel claustrophobic about a 5-minute segment of him and a bank teller passing chicken scratch back and forth in the 21st century with other customers waiting in line in a small room where everyone's movements and activity can be even peripherally observed by any bystander? And the masks were ridiculous.
You might as well feel claustrophobic about a mime swinging an imaginary hammer at you.

The Collector (sampled by Slipknot)

I was surprised by the intensity of the first ten minutes. Almost expected to be a Wes Anderson action movie.
But it comes back to its usual stuff after that, with one or two quirky episodes too many (Scarlett Johanson is particularly bland).
Also, for a moment I thought it was gonna end like Casino Royale (the old one from the 60s) but Anderson chickens out. It'd had been more appropriate ending for this set of characters.
6.5/10 not a bad trip to the kinoplex
>>211690653 (OP)>QOTDBlack Hawk Down
>>211691704I do really like Le Cercle Rouge and agree that it's arguably the best heist film ever. Rififi was also good fun. I'll have to rewatch The Departed. I love Marty in general but I don't remember really being on the edge of my seat in the same as with Le Cercle Rouge, Uncut Gems, the first time I watched the border showdown in Sicario, etc.
Sleuth is not a thriller whatsoever, though Olivier is masterful. Gone Girl was fun but also not a true edge-of-your-seat thriller.
Have you seen Memories of Murder? You may enjoy it if you like thrillers. Zodiac was also a very nice slow-burn thriller.
Have you seen Run Lola Run? I've been meaning to check that out.
Also, Victoria is a great thriller done in 2-3 tracking shots.

I just watched the jav where the girl gets forced to drink alcohol and then the guys beat the shit out of her until she starts bleeding and crying. I donโt think cinema has ever truly reached that peak her porn is pushing the medium farther than real xinema
>>211691827I'm not really super into thrillers, so I mentioned the entry level ones first, believing you to be a newfag. I can post deeper gemeralds, if you wish.
>>211691497Again, everything is "unrealistic" considering they are all un-real, this ultimately cannot the aim of film, which is entirely of the imagination, otherwise direct re-creations of reality would be the aim of film, which is inferior to life itself and you'd be praising found-footage or youtube home videos the most since they are the most spontaneous and thus "real."
These other critiques are just beyond pedantic. "The masks are ridiculous." What? I don't even like the film really at all, but you're just fretting over stuff I barely remembered.
The film is a bad action movie, because it focuses too much on non-action ideals, like the relationship between the brothers and the rehabilitation ideal, whereas John Wick is just entirely in the action.

I didn't watch it because I wanted a good action movie, and I'm not limiting my criticism to your argument premised on your memory of the movie (which doesn't include a recollection of the poor masks--which I can understand as underlining the amateurishness of the characters, but that makes the way the bank scene played out all the poorer).
I think I'm gonna watch Run Lola Run. That's a classic of the thriller genre, I hear.

I actually think Good Time works as a fantastic character study when it comes to Benny Safdie's character. He's immensely talented. His role in Good Time (a believable cognitively retarded man) vs. The Curse (a conniving TV producer) are so wildly different. Dude is lowkey an elite actor.

>>211694232I didn't, the Jennifer Jason Leigh character was them making fun of someone they knew. I've met women like that, just sort of over-sized spinsters who still live at home but are mentally trying to be like they are 10-12 again and just have been introduced to boys again. In fact, I dated one I met on Hinge who was 40 but kept talking about how she looked 12 and asked if I was a Pedo because she looked so young (she looked mid-30s not 40, think she was trying to cope), who would send me 300 texts when I went to sleep each night and was a professional doctor, they're rare but do exist. Sort of pitiable, only harmful to themselves. I miss her, but that was painfully realistic for that extremely rare type of person. I don't see why that would be in a thriller, though.
He was secondary to Pattinson, and the end with him in jail was the type of matrydom/castration that Hollywood loves to peddle nowadays. The film was basically Bad Lieutenant. Herzogs or Ferrara.
Manhunter is a masterpiece.
>>211695714Lol, those kinds of femcels are so weird, hard to believe they exist. Reminds me of a relationship I had with a spanish woman who was 20 years older than me, but was a kid emotionally. Terrible relationship.
>>211695714That's interesting. I've never met a 50-year-old woman who would publicly lose all dignity at the first impasse and regress to an infantile meltdown. If you find it believable, then I suppose it is a credit to the movie as it shows Pattinson's character preying on yet another mentally vulnerable person.
I think Benny was second to Pattinson only because the movie virtually precludes him from the meaty second act and all of the third act apart from the epilogue. I was much more intrigued by him in his spare scenes, though I think Pattinson was also somewhat underutilized despite being in most frames.
He's definitely going to jail, but being a native New Yorker, his story is all too common and I loved that groundedness. I don't think there's any martyrdom in his story, though. He's cold-blooded lowlife scum who was nowhere near skilled enough to carry out that kind of life. It's actually quite a rich irony considering how he was disparaging the guy he accidentally sneaked out.
I really enjoy Mann (rewatched Collateral recently--I had forgotten how good Foxx was, though of course Cruise stole the show--and my God, Mann's directing aesthetic is just pure class--I wonder if he's inspired by Robby Muller).
The only Herzogs I've seen so far are Grizzly Man and Aguirre. Both are pure kino.
>>211696006>I've never met a 50-year-old woman who would publicly lose all dignity at the first impasse and regress to an infantile meltdown. There are a ton of people like that. Always remember: society is comprised mostly of mentally ill 6 year olds stuck inside an adult's body.
>>211695909Absolutely bizarre, they'll be like 40 years old and "cut themselves" like they are still in middle school, they like the idea of being young and discovering boys again for the first time. Extremely unstable, many of them have careers. Just insane. It's what happens when the truly feminine has to spend a lot of time alone or be independent by circumstance, I'd imagine.
>>211696006As if Botox-ridden rich pseudo-trannies don't do stuff like that regularly.
Idk I don't like the film that much, it's been discussed too long desu.
I hate Mann, I just like Manhunter.
Herzog's Bad Lieutenant is much better than Good Time.
this was really great, yet i never heard of it before. a modernized jack the ripper (as even hinted in the opening scene) story and very matter of fact. very much up there regarding the hitchcocks ive seen. a lot less boring than psycho and the birds for example (his other 'horror' stories). any other movies of alfie that deserve more attention in your opinion, lads?
>>211696215I was gonna watch Master and Commander (first time). Should I swap it out for Manhunter or Bad Lieutenant? Haven't seen either.
>>211696155Yeah, you're not long. Remember how dumb the average person can seem--then recall that 50% of people are dumber than that.
>>211696296I don't really like Master and Commander. It's a comfy film, but nothing great. I'd do Manhunter or Over the Edge first, though the end of Over the Edge is really ridiculous. Think he was sort of pastiching Zabriskie Point with that.

>Co-director of the documentaries "The Corporation" and "The New Corporation" murdered in home assult by another 60s years old woman, who wanted to steal her jewelry
A 66-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a film director was found dead at home in north London with tape over her mouth.
The body of Jennifer Abbott, 69, who was known professionally as Sarah Steinberg, was discovered in her Camden flat on 13 June. She was last seen three days earlier, walking her pet corgi nearby.
DI Barry Hart, of the Met police, said on Thursday: โOur deepest sympathies are with the victimโs loved ones who are being supported by specialist officers at this time.
โWe thank the local community for their patience as we continue to investigate this shocking crime. This arrest marks a significant step forward. There are several lines of inquiry ongoing, and we are working hard to establish the exact circumstances of this incident.โ
Police said on Wednesday that a missing diamond-encrusted Rolex watch could be linked to the stabbing. Detectives were said to be keeping an open mind about any motive but were appealing for information about the watch, which they believed was missing.
An ambulance crew was called to Abbottโs home in Mornington Place, Camden, at about 6pm on 13 June and she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said a postmortem examination was carried out on Sunday and gave the cause of death as sharp force trauma.

>>211690653 (OP)India Song, from a 0.5 to a 5.0 (best watched severely sleep-deprived)
I've cleverly devised a surrogate for maggie. Enter marie wilson - an old school actress and radio star too latterly obscure to stir my jealousy. I'm going to paint her some day (instead of maggie). Thank you for your time.
>>211692435hahahaha hell yeah dude
>>211703847Did that taste good, doesn't sound like it would.

>>211702339Noooo Dingo, don't talk shit about The Cleveland show! David LEEEEEEENCH literally plays himself as a character in it!!!!!!!
>>211703598For Your Eyes Only is the most kino visually, the most /film/ one might be the Lazenby one.
>>211697665What are some other good polish movies? I've only watched Lesson of a Dead Language (1979) and part of the Pan Tadeusz silent film before falling asleep.
>>211703968It tastes really good if you blend it but my ninja is broken so I had to stir it in with a spoon.
>>211704025Which one was that? I don't remember.
>wifeAn ill augur if a word ever were
Just watched The Killing
That was so based
I wished the police officer from the Godfather got away with it, it felt a bit silly to screw him over the way they did but seeing the guy's wife was amazing after he managed to stand up for himself
It's funny because I just stopped watching Double Indemnity and Kind Hearts and Coronets because I didn't like the voice over but I managed to push through with this one and it was ok
>>211704229Walkover (1964), the best polish film and one of the best films ever made.
>>211704399Watch Asphalt Jungle, another stellar heist noir with Sterling Hayden.
>>211704399>>211704501Add Crime Wave by Andre de Toth.
>>211704448I'll add it to my list. The featured actress is a real smokeshow
>>211704601Another good one, hard to go wrong with any noir with Ted de Corsia in it.
How do I know what's good from what's bad? What is a sign that a movie is "good"
>>211704550Definitely don't remember her being mentioned
>>211704829This guy is AI, don't answer him.
>>211704895Good God, man, that was like two days ago and you already forgot? You even said she was in too many romance movies and i replied that she wasn't the one being romanced in them.
>>211704829The capacity for aesthetical and ethical thought comes from G itself.
Sorry, you're soulless.
bad = peanus doesn't move
good = peanus moves but no juice comes out
bad = peanus moves and also juice comes out
>>211704229My polish top 3 is The Hourglass Sanatorium, The Saragossa Manuscript and Kanal 1957. And of course you should check out anything Kieลlowski made. Keep in mind that a lot of our films can be fully appreciated only if you know some historical/political context behind it which is probably why Polish cinema never got that popular.
I can't recommend the The Hourglass Sanatorium 1973 enough, after seeing thousands of films I have never seen quite like it again. It's the best dreamlike movie there is in my opinion
>>211705052Gooner type shit.
>>211704829The mise-en-scene.
I watched that Danish or Norwegian sex tourist trilogy
Well lensed
>>211705036It's not in my bookmarks for some reason.
>>211705077Alright I'll add those to my backlog as well.
>a lot of our films can be fully appreciated only if you know some historical/political context behind itMy knowledge of poland is limited to what was taught in one upper level class on eastern european history. If you know a good textbook on polish history (in english) I'd be glad to give it a go.
The ending of this was so good. Gonna watch another Shaw Bros tonight.
I plan on watching 5 movies tomorrow to break the /tv/ world record

>>211691208>Also, the way he snuck his "brother" out of the hospital, despite the bed alarm going off which would obviously attract any medical personnel, was ridiculous.Bed alarms go off all the time in hospital, most staff aren't getting to that for 5 minutes if they notice it at all. It's more silly that a prisoner only has one guard instead of at least two for the very reason of going for breaks. Also your point about about a 40 year old woman having public outbursts being unrealistic is strange, do you really think they're aren't irrational people walking around in real life? The stuff about the bank is fair though
shaking my thing and getting down with my bad self
>>211706170I agree, just couldn't find a rip of the last Arrow disc other than this. It's not like these are robust transfers anyway
So what are your favorite Shaw joints?
>>211706787Only seen a few so far but love on delivery

>Satantango the book: 333 pages
>Satantango the film: 439 minutes
Can someone that has seen Tarr's film please tell me why it averages on less than a page a minute? Is it adapted right down to the fucking word or is every scene drawn out to ridiculous lengths?
>>211707546After it is done
>>211707993I liked both normie and patrician stuff, which made me approachable both to normies and to people who were more experienced into art.
For example, I used to go watch capeshit and Disney flicks with my friends because I genuinely liked some of that stuff, but I also rec'd friends some more obscure stuff that I knew they would like, like reccing biker friends Akira and Vanishing Point. In music, it was more of the same; I used to hang with jocks who liked me because I listened to Pantera and Avenged Sevenfold, but trve dorky metalheads also liked me because I listened to Coroner and Dissection. I just had crossover appeal and was respected for my taste from very early on, but I had enough self awareness to not be an avant-teen because I actually liked normies.
>>211708831So, I basically was an anime fan, not a weeb, but applied to art in general.
>>211690653 (OP)>What film have you changed opinion on the most since your first viewing?I thought picrel was the shit at age 11, then I read the book and thought it was terrible and it actually put me to sleep. Then I watched the movie after 6 or 7 years and thought it was near-unwatchable.
>>211697733I wasn't. I've only grown more intolerable as I've aged and become more exposed to entertainment media. Some things still hold up, though, like Super Mario Bros.
