He did like 80 dives with it, some all the way down to Titanic depth.

The problem is that he essentially made a dispoable submarine but kept reusing it. It's like using the same condom over and over again, eventually it'll break no matter how well you maintain it.

There's nothing wrong with using carbon fiber for the sub. It has a compressive strength comparable to steel. Where he fucked up was using different material for the hemispheres. If he had made the entire sub of carbon fiber properly (which is extremely difficult and expensive to do) he would have had no problem.

The real explanation was that he was the very definition of a privileged nepo baby. He was heir to literally perhaps the oldest fortune in the US (his great grandpappy or something signed the Declaration of Independence) these guys have egos the size of Jupiter and believe almost religiously that they are entitled to a 99.9th percentile status job as an adult.

The problem is is that outside of perfunctory modern gentry class jobs like hedge fund board member, non-profit exec and the NGO grift, there is an element of meritocracy to high status jobs. He decided his best way to guarantee being at the top despite being 120 IQ at best was to be a "trailblazer" in an industry with a huge entry cost (how many smart first generation immigrants are going to have the capital or connections to start a submarine company from the ground up?). He knew he could be the Elon Musk of submarines by default because there were like maybe 12 other submarine companies in the world and all of them actually care about safety and science.

Even still, the moment one of his engineers expressed the slightest criticism he fired them and threatened to destroy their life with daddy's money. He couldn't even accept that he was fated to win from the start, he had to win every micro-argument on the way, even if they were about saving his own life.

>It has a compressive strength comparable to steel.
Yeah, until it doesn't and *POP*. Steel and titanium are superior because they are a known quality. We know scientifically how many cycles of compression at various depths the material can take until its unsafe. Wrapping a tube in epoxy and carbon fiber with thousands of random micro voids in between layers the way they did isn't something that can be reliably tested to any type of certainty in the results.

And thats not even mentioning the fact the idiot put hard points for craning it out of the water in areas that were not designed to take that kind of lifting load safely and leaving it outdoors unprotected in fucking Canada over winter...

It wasn't the hemispheres constantly popping and cracking. The carbon fiber was breaking apart from the first dive.
