question of the day
question of the day

Is there a movie of the past 5 years you can endorse without reservation? Think hard.

From the top of my head:
The Wolf of Snow Hollow
Kid Detective
Promising Young Woman
#Alive
Blink Twice
The Killer
Nosferatu
Polite Society
Marlowe (I still don't understand why it got so poor reviews)

For more, I would need to actually check movies by date to make sure.

Hunger Games and Avatar 2. I donโ€™t think thereโ€™s any capeshit Iโ€™d recommend thoroughly. I think Thunderbolts was the best post Infinity War movie but it being part of the larger lame mcu automatically ruins any betterment it made. Not sure if I should count ZSJL.

when you say reservation do you mean even the slightest one, like it has to be in our perspective a flawless movie, or do you mean "absent of any serious monkey wrenches that injure the 0-10 score"

and does it have to be MADE in the last 5 years or do you just mean something we've watched in the last 5 years?

there is a lot of dogshit picks in this thread and i genuinely can't tell if half of these posts are being facetious or are just completely ignoring the premise of the question - so i don't think i have enough information

>the gorge
romance, horror, soft operator action - heavy on competency, keeps the story pretty tight so the pacing is good, the beginning is a little a slow but it does build tension and mystery nicely until it drops completely into the action from point A to the end of the movie
>flight risk
i actually really love this one, it's very weird, very novel - mark wahlberg - and he carries and carries well. high stakes at all times once the ball starts rolling
>land of bad
plain and simple operator kino though the mel gibson parts do start to drag on
>madS
a one-take, french, day-zero zombie outbreak movie following mostly unimportant individuals - but it is an interesting take on the madness of an overwhelming infection and i think a great spectacle of acting range and emotion
>fight or flight
jumpy, crazy, gory madness on a plane - it's essentially bullet train but in my opinion about 75% less reddit and useless downtime
>kill
indian, just watch it in hindi with the subs, it's a very odd quasi-meta take on the john wick/operator genre that's vogue in action right now, and the payoff in reaching the turning point of the movie (and where it amplifies the action tenfold) is well worth it IF you can stomach bollywood-lite theatrics. i'd say this movie is definitely a sign of a changing landscape for indian film
>the northman
solid eggers take on hamlet set in an ancient norse society, honestly this movie is a little iffy if you go into it expecting your standard action/fantasy medieval sort of outline, enjoy it for the spectacle and the occasional weird nod to actual mythos and historical record in history - it's not an "accurate" movie by any means but it does have authenticity
>troll
i just loved it for all the cool trolls
>the sadness
if you've ever heard of crossed before or have read any of the comics, this is the closest you're going to come to a film adaptation of it
>mortal
i've hit the character limit, more to follow

If you want to take streaming I would say I'm Leave the World Behind and Greyhound are the top two I would recommend with no reservations. I recommend The Gorge with reservations because the actual payoff to the mystery brings it down when they could have easily nailed it just by sticking to what it was selling.

>mortal
a modern story of the revival of the ancient norse gods with a grounded take on their mythological powers, their descendants, and what they left behind. awesome movie (if a little slow) with a beautiful soundtrack
>the empty man
a very well executed horror, don't look anything about this up if you're interested, it's very easy to get spoiled and the mystery is frankly a big part of it all. no further comment
>underwater
pure aquatic horror kino. great effects, great costumes and sets, i think kristen stewart was the right pick, and it's a straightforward story that's perfect for anybody i think - if you like horror that is
>possessor
may be too odd or at times brutal for some but this movie is AMAZING. cronenberg's son directed this and i believe it was his directorial debut, and holy fuck did he knock it out of the park. you'll just have to watch it if you like dystopian, bleak, heady horror. it's a real trip
>extraction
specifically over extraction 2 because unfortunately while extraction 2 is great it's also shit and i've tried to only include certifiable kino. this is the OG, this is the movie i think that helped concrete the new, one-take heavy, fast paced, dynamic fights that sprawl across an endless urban scape with almost no time to breath as chris hemsworth engages in gun fights, car chases, hand to hand combat, everything. everybody has probably seen this movie by now but if you haven't, watch it. pure action with no frills
>boss level
frank grillo, comedy-action with acceptable and well earned sappy moments, blood and guts, time loop. need i say more

way too much rah rah girlpower shit, way too many tag along characters stealing the show, way too much downtime and unnecessary buildup. its pacing is just way worse and while there are some seriously fucking cool shots i won't mention for the sake of spoilers (you know what scene in particular i'm talking about surely) it just completely shits the bed in like the whole last third of the movie.

there's also a lot of plot armor in 2 as compared to 1 where he was still like a bull charging through everyone but he still accrued injuries and got fatigued and nearly lost and almost got smoked several times.

between extraction 1 and 2, 1 is simply the better movie; again, not necessarily because it had MORE GOOD, but because it had LESS BAD. the sequel simply isn't as tight as the original and the premise is pretty iffy too

I prefer movies with a few good set pieces rather than having him stop acting that never stops. It always gets exhausting. It's one of the reasons I dropped John Wick and haven't seen 4 yet. Non stop action with no breaks is numbing and tiring. A good series of set pieces is always better I.m.o.

I liked The Menu.

Its not an all time great film or anything; but it was a solid comedy horror flick that I enjoyed without reservations.

I think that's about it though. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was good; but that's over 5 years now.

Nothing from the past 15 years even. Every movie is just cgi, drone shots, large text on the screen (LONDON, ENGLAND (NO SHIT)), mumble acting, shitty hipster douche music, lazy remakes or nostalgia bait. Every fucking numovie has to follow the same formula and force stupid shit in. They all feel like netflix movies. All the best actors, directors and general talent have been and gone. There will never be another Charles Bronson or another Alfred Hitchcock, etc. Movies is dead. But thankfully, we have a 100+ years of film to watch until we die.

Saw this on TV and while my TV's sound is shit, the sound mixing was awful. I'm (sadly) a Bong and couldn't understand what the not!Bongs were saying, it wasn't because they were American's doing Bong accents, it's just the diegetic soundwas drowning it out and making it difficult to hear. I might need to rewatch on another source.

fair point, i think we fundamentally disagree on what we prefer our pacing to be. the continuity of him running from alley to building to alley to building and climbing stairs and getting knocked off the balcony those stairs lead up to just to jack a car and start swerving and getting into a roving gunfight is too good. he's a big fucking white guy in a huge city in india that is pretty much entirely run by a criminal kingpin, almost a warlord, and he is enemy number 1 - no friends, no back up, just him and his gun.

i like that "tiger set loose in the streets of mumbai" energy a lot more than the ebbs and flows of his mission in 2 - but now i think i'm remembering my problem with it actually - because that kind of in-and-out from peace to hyper-violence works well and i do enjoy it, but not the way they did it

it's called EXTRACTION, but in extraction 2, the EXTRACTION is over at like the halfway point of the movie if not less. pretty much all the trouble they experience after that is because they decided to just hang around and let the braindead kid they just saved get them fucked over. the series is high octane and brutally violent and the kid in 1 took his advice well to "stay there and don't make a sound" and that works in-universe as well as for us - because we as an audience don't want some annoying ass kid getting in the way of the action movie. in 1, the EXTRACTION is the goal and he has to fight every inch of the way to pull that off... but in 2, it kind of feels like their own incompetence and ill-preparedness forces the second half of the movie to even happen at all

you're going to ignore the entire list because you didn't like that i put the chronologically newest movie at the top of my chronological list? why be a retard? why be so intellectually difficult? why even fucking tell me? i don't give a shit what you do, but i'll still gladly tell you it's pathetic. we're 6 months into the year and it's pretty much the only thing i can think of from it so far that wasn't complete shit. it's a good movie and at least 7 if not a 7.5 for that first fight scene alone. come on, stop that

Heat is my #3 favorite movie of all time. Just something about the tone of Top Gun Maverick and the way everyone was acting just felt .. off. There is a very very small set of non gay non homo people that feel the same way as I do. I've seen at least one other YouTuber say something similar so I know I'm not the only one.

To me Extraction 2 is the best pure action movies in years and even better than the later JW movies (even though I haven't seen 4 yet). It's even more mind boggling when one considers how far down Netflix originals have dropped in quality since then. Underrated kinos like Bright and Extraction 2 are a far cry from the current A.I. tier slop they put out like Electric State ( which I didn't finish because was so bad)

one of them was even too stupid to notice the list i posted after smugly declaring i hadn't done it yet - an hour before he posted

you should probably stop taking "characters" into account on how much people care or are emotionally evolved too lmao. i write like +110 words a fucking minute and i'm shit drunk, this is my fun time while i wait to get sleepy enough for bed and occasionally tab out to watch openfront gameplay

The Menu was fun for one watch but its pretentious and the plot is hillariously stupid. At any time the main character could have stopped cooking and just gone back to flipping fucking burgers but instead spergs out and murder suicides a bunch of people. I swear whoever wrote the movie has a warped sense of how the cooking industry views itself. Its nowhere near that pretentious.
