Our ancestors drank (exceptionally weak, on purpose) beer because it was their only reliable and scaleable method of sterilizing water while also having the insane extra benefit of preserving wheat and other grains. Beer is one of the most overpowered, simplistic, lucky, copacetic survival mechanisms we ever stumbled upon as a species.
I'd much rather grimace and down some weak enough beer that it will actually hydrate me after a long day's work than get dysentery drinking from a communal well.
But as a pampered post-industrial man, I really prefer to drink mainly distilled water for my health, and the occasional apple juice for enjoyment, because it tastes good. That's also why wine (vino) was so beloved: it was water that tasted sweet and great and was safe to drink, but you just had to be rich to have it, because it was from pressed grapes. Wine used to refer indiscriminately to grape juice and fermented grape juice, fermentation into alcohol that still often tasted okay compared to beer at least was one of its many benefits, you didn't have to constantly pour it out because it wouldn't truly go bad for a while.
