>>211737921>music hall shows, which were like vaudevilleThis shit has been in the UK for centuries, part of the culture. So when TV was invented it would have been adapted to TV, and over time they changed the format for TV rather than imitating actual variety shows, which eventually turned into panel shows.
Its why for example we have in the UK the "floodlights" comedy troupe shit in the oxford unis (and other places) because that type of variety shit is a UK staple.
I live in leicester and there is a comedy festival each year, same as in edinburgh. This shit is UK culture and panel shows, again, are an adaptation of that for TV.
Funny too because the carry on movies were modern take on variety shows which most, if not all of the comedians came from variety shows.
Its inherent in UK culture.
Coincidentally even peter kay did a sit com about it, because he himself comes from the variety culture.
We also have a yearly variety show on TV which the queen attends (of did last time I watched TV) called the "royal variety show"
It is THAT ingrained in UK culture.
>>211737826>comedy circle has always been rife with nepotism and croneyismapparently it is also very competitive where comedians are often cunts to each other as they are all competing for what is essentially very few jobs.
Panel shows I suppose gives them all a bigger pool of work.
Funny actually because in like 2013 for 6 months I watched TV after not watching TV for over a decade and all I watched really was E4 and dave which is pretty much all sit coms and panel shows.
If I was forced to watch TV I could watch that shit all day.
