It's a weird movie. I think a good way to check whether someone will like it is to see how they react when told that a movie is "weird". If they see that as praise and become more interested in watching it, then they'll probably like 28YL. If they see it as a criticism and look concerned then they probably won't like it.
A more honest trailer might have been a good idea although personally I like being misled by trailers.

This must be the first film in over a decade that feels like it's celebrating British culture rather than actively trying to destroy it.

>>211737374They should have done 28 months later and focused on the infection hitting Europe and Asia. I'm getting tired of the bri'ish countryside. Give us some variety. Story should have been super basic like just surviving and watching the infection spread - the best part of any infection movie then the end they should have gone back to the bri'ish isles to look for potential carriers to lead into this movie. They need to advance the story a little bit. I'm not asking for anything super complicated just make it have a point.
Why don't the rage monsters wear clothes.
The intro should have shown Cambridge, where the outbreak initially happened. If it occurs in Scotland, the family would have had weeks to prepare. Show the family getting ripped apart, one by one. Do a similar opening to 28 Weeks Later, but with kids instead.
Act One can stay the same.
Act Two I'm fine with, but instead of 8 Swedes, make it 3 (or 4 but one's critically injured). Have their landing shown. They slaughter ample infected and show no signs of trouble. They meet the mother and Spike and escort them... but then the Alpha rips them to pieces The baby is a terrible idea - do away with it.
Doctor can't save the mother. Keep it as is. Mother dies. Pajeet Alpha killed by Spike. Spike feels there's nothing more for him back home, so he goes further inland.
Have zero infected fatties. Avoid having Samson tranquilized.
The trailer was a masterpiece and I feel like I just watched the wrong movie. Why the fuck was this a movie about a kid? I'm actually angry. Now there's Alpha large cock zombies flopping their dicks at kids. Unreal. 28 Weeks was better. And no John Murphy theme? Fucks sake.

This is what makes zombie movies good - that there's no place really safe and as you adopt to fight off the infection, so do they. I loved the idea of the alpha - just has a stupid name. The pregnant scene is dumb but I understand the line of thinking behind it.

I felt like I was watching the editing of Snatch or LSATSB at times. It was an odd but ultimately worthwhile film. Didn't love it, but I liked it well enough.
There were themes of reversion to earlier forms of human society and how that connects us to our animalistic origins that I thought was interesting. The interspersing of technicolor British movie footage of feudal archers alongside scenes of the village having to defend itself. Or the babbling brook scene with the infected trying to catch fish/fuck with rocks while a pregnant one waddle-screams by. Interesting, although they rap you over the head a bit with it.
I could see how someone from /pol/ might be able to interpret this movie as a psyop for uncivilized culture in the form of immigration, also. Not saying this was necessarily tyhe intent..but wiuth Alex Garland idk anymore.

>>211755163yeah that's a you thing anon.
since TLOU I've realized that a large section of /tv/ can't relate to anything without there being a male protagonist over 20 but it's not a question of cinematic quality. the fact that Spike is obviously the main character from the beginning yet people insist the second half is a different movie for no specific reason is just another example.
the equivalent criticism of TLOU part 1 would be "oh ellie look out for the infected oh haha you told a dad joke oh we're eating out of cans".
Someone post the webm of the Jimmy Saville power ranger rape gang at the end. I have not seen a tonal shift like that in at least a decade. They do 10 foot frontflips over zombies! Not many movies I can say are ruined by their ending but that end is all anyone can think about.

Long ago, the four kingdoms lived in harmony. That all changed when the Infected attacked. Only Jimmy Saville, master of molesting all four nations could stop them. But when the world needed him most, he died.
28 Years Later passed, and my baby and I discovered the new Saville, a gender-bender named Jimmy, and although his molesting skills are great, he has a lot to learn before he's ready to diddle anyone.
But I believe.... Jimmy can save cinema.
I liked this more than 28 weeks, which just seemed like a dumber and more generic follow-up. This had the balls to be weird, both in Boyles editing, certain themes, and in tonal incongruity (not just talking about the intentionally comedic ending. Additionally, once the pair got to the bone temple it was BOTH morbid and sort of touching?)
>>211755439Well, of course not. It was ridiculous.

Do you even know who Jimmy Saville is? Whoop de fuckin doo, we get a whole sequel about a gang of faggots!
The whole film was brought down by that last scene. It is basically a Sam Raimi film. Don’t even try to argue, bitch.

>>211755487Maybe I wasn't being clear in my post. I actually liked those parts. But I like a lot of B-horror too and this was very much a send-up to some of the goofier shit I've seen in bad/good horror movies in the past. But normies and non horror genre fans might be a little thrown by it. My parents specifically hate tonal shifts or incongruity in movies. Cannot wrap their head around it and would hate shit like what Gunn did with Ellie Page in Super. This has it, like it or not. I did.

And the kills with this troupe on the infected were very "disrespectful" in contrast to some of the other treatment of infected by the boy and father/mother (sometimes letting them go out of pity or a vague sense of empathy). They will inistially try to win the boy over and pull him to their more morally corrupted way of life (from the boy's experience of being left alone at the start of 28 Years) but will ultimately reject it and they will be one of or THE major antagonists of the second movie. The cross is now turned upside down at the end of the movie, the symbol of satanism, clearly reflecting this corruption in belief. I swear to god, cap this. One of the cool things 28 days/weeks had going for it was the infected felt like genuine threats, but I don’t see how we’re meant to take them seriously now that Jimmy Saville Ninjas can basically take down entire an entire pack of them in a parkour montage just to flex in front of a kid.
Like even the Alpha feels neutered considering they used the morphine trick on him twice.
>>211756143The idea of empathy towards the infected is still a hard sell. Before Years they were always depicted as feral beasts, even if you choose to use the depiction in Years there's still plenty of infected that would gladly pounce on any normal person if given a chance.
This would be a lot more digestible of an idea if they kept the idea of carriers from Weeks, people who are isolated from Holy Island and forced into exile.

>>211757728I’m not offended. I find it stupid. It’s dumb. It’s like if The Kings from New Vegas showed up at the very end and did triple flips over other characters and killed everyone.
As the most cultured and fair spokesperson of /tv/, and after considerable consideration to the views voiced by the most esteemed posters of this fine board, I declare the official /tv/ rating for 28 Years Later to be 6/10, with a forecast maximum of 4/10 for the following film.
I have spoken
>>211757548You are so brain rotted by Marvel. To you, setting up a trilogy with breadcrumbs is being different and creative. Not making a self contained quality film.
>>211757798my condolences. maybe they'll make a Smile 3 or a Saw 12 and you can watch that.
>>211757728>completely missing the point that it’s a dogshit ending you’re not convincing anyone, pal
>>211757798Kek.
>>211757841Or 28 Days Later 3. Oh, wait...
>>211757837you write like someone whose been hurt before. I feel your pain anon. perhaps one day you can learn to trust movies again.
>>211757728Nobody is offended by it or thinks it's actually intended to be some homage to Seville. They're just mocking it for being a silly ending
>>211757824it's a 7.5 dont get memed
>>211757841>drops his argument again because he knows he’s wrong and can only insultYou’re really bad at this whole debating thing, y’know?
>>211757870the thing about standard sequels is they just repeat the original movie. which seems to be what you wanted.
>>211757852you're failing to convince me that my positive impressions of the film were mistaken.
>>211754819For the stream thing I thought they were going for a infecting the water angle but it just seemed like they were enjoying the water. IIRC one was splashing his hands in the water so maybe that one was trying to fish, since at the end one of infected completely ignored MC and stole the fish he was cooking.
>>211757548>I could go into how the Sycamore Gap tree still being there indicated we're in an alternate realityThis is actually interesting. I just checked and principal photography started on August of 2024, so the tree had already been felled, so it IS deliberate.
>>211757953cope
this is going to fall off so hard during the second week. it’s only been a day and the audience score is 69%.
>>211757909there are actually people upthread talking like they WERE offended by it.
>>211757974my arguments are ITT and have not been challenged. I don't need to repeat them.
>>211757548You seem upset as though people are leaving their local independently-run kinoplex, not understanding what the small indie arthouse flick is about. This is just a long awaited sequel to a mainstream zombie series, people are undeniably walking away feeling mixed or even disappointed. Especially because it isn't really a standalone story, plenty of answers are still purposefully withheld and timegated because it wanted to stretch itself out as a trilogy.
>>211757897You write like someone who literally cheers at the post credit Marvel scenes.
>>211758003>which seems to be what you wanted.I'm not the anon you're bickering with like a retard. I wanted nothing and I still found most of the film utterly lacking, rushed, and ridiculous.
>>211758003I’m not trying to convince you of anything. I’m laughing at how hard you’re trying to convince others that that ending was good in any way shape or form. You’re embarrassing yourself and making the film sound even worse
>>211755904There was also a background detail earlier in the film where the boy sees a building with something like "BEWARE JIMMY" or something like that painted on it.
>>211757953The first half is a 7.5 out of ten
>>211758056>mad cuz badgreat argument kek
>>211758056I was offended by how bad it was. Most people should be.
>>211733512 (OP)>tv says its shit>watch it>its actually kino
>>211758058the first movie was shot for very little - it WAS a small arthouse indie flick and became a mainstream success on merit and also led to shit like TWD and TLOU. zombie films were all originally indie.
your attitude and that of many ITT strikes me as intellectually insecure, like any movie that does something unexpected is attacking you personally.
Did anyone else think this was trying way too hard to be artsy? The “boots, boots, boots” part had nothing to do with anything. There weren’t any military or marching analogies or metaphors at all other than walking across the land bridge. Did they just want that so they could put it in the trailer?
>>211758016>For the stream thing I thought they were going for a infecting the water angle but it just seemed like they were enjoying the waterThat could have been a good plot point but this film is littered with interesting tidbits like the mask in the village or the man left hanging in the abandoned house that go nowhere. Really seemed like the film couldn't wait to get to the ending for the sequel teaser, only to throw itself off a cliff in the last 5 minutes
>>211758140you can't even respond to any of my arguments. I set out to convince you of nothing.
>>211758291Remind me, did the first movie have a power ranger rape gang doing acrobatics in it?
>>211758272that's not a problem. art often provokes strong reactions from people.
>>211758341>The “boots, boots, boots” part had nothing to do with anythingYeah they completely failed to actually tie that in with the plot itself but it made for some kino scenes. The marketing made it seem like it would be an in world radio broadcast from some mainlander cult, which they certainly hinted at with opening scene of the priest having a psychotic religious revelation about the infected.
Turned out to just be window dressing and sequel bait. SAD!
>>211758465the first movie had soldiers who were giga rapey after 4 weeks of apocalypse. it was criticized a lot for it IIRC.
it also had Cillian Hinds running around like a ninja at the end when he "became" the infected metaphorically. but its a classic so you watched it uncritically.

>>211758509>arteven this shit is better than that ending, art my ass kek
>>211758291>>211758509But, anon, this has (((Hollywood)))/(((Netflix))) mindless, mass-produced sloppa written all over it. You really think putting some albino globe trotters rape gang in it in the end for shock value has even a modicum of true artistic sensitivity?
>>211757548>so Jimmy Saville wasn't outed as a pedo and the sequel is probably going to provide more commentary on how culture got frozen in time in 2002 and compare that to our own nostalgia-obsessed culture. As someone who thought 28 Years had a mediocre second / third act, this is actually an interesting idea, but I struggle to see how this would be relevant at all to characters in a zombie apocalypse, what do they care about pop culture at this point? It still doesn't justify the kung fu fighting farce.
>>211740747>This must be the first film in over a decade that feels like it's celebrating British culture rather than actively trying to destroy it.This
>>211758604Did those soldiers do backwards ninja frontflips to slice up the zombies? I might need a refresher if so.
>cilian running like an infected when he “became” oneHow is that similar at all to the ninja gang? You’re just pulling shit out your ass at this point
>>211750263>is being directed by one of the most obnoxious black women in the world; the one that made The Acolyte;wtf why? Why cant boyle just keep it?
>>211758688Samson is a pakistani and he never gets killed because the doctor feels bad for him or some shit.
>>211758748she made The Marvels too lol, we are so fucked
>>211758669>what do they care about pop culture at this point?Especially when most of those blonde pole vaulters don't look older than mid to late 20's, meaning they would have need to have grown up in the apocalypse with nothing but a few Jimmy Saville VHS tapes for entertainment
>>211758617Alex Garland had the trilogy all written in advance. it might start sucking at any point of course, we'll have to see. but the forward planning is reassuring and he thought Jimmy was important enough to start the whole movie with his backstory.
but he's not really a netflixy guy, more an A24 "this character is a metaphor for sexism" dude. in Netflix shows the sexism guy is just openly sexist so we know sexism is bad, metaphors don't really come into it.
>>211758669because horror movies can work as commentary on actual society, like the zombies pushing shopping carts in the original DOTD.
>>211758813When was the last good A24 film? They’ve been slop like netflix for at least a few years now.
>>211758710I bet Boyle had no idea that backflips SPECIFICALLY would trigger so many people but I have a feeling he'd be laughing his ass off at the reaction.
>>211758863>commentary on society>sequel is going to have a discussion about artists like jimmy saville and michael jackson being unfairly cancelledBRAVO!
>>211758873idk, I don't get the impression we have the same taste in film lol
>>211758688I'm not partial to the discreet, anti-white subtext analysis that some anons have, purely because I don't think the writer or director is conscious or intelligent enough to be that subtle, but the film includes a scene of a 7 foot tall brown man running angrily at the protagonists with the decapitated head of a young, white blonde man in hand and his dick swinging in the air. Also has a deliberate shot of the English flag burning.
Calling this a celebration of British culture is a stretch. Best it does is not being filled with non whites, which by today's standard is almost subversive
>>211758918my guess is he shat this out his ass for fun. one guy already said it but it really did feel like a Sam Raimi film
>>21175829128 DAYS, yes, but even then its "arthouse" roots are still somewhat up for debate because Garland was inspired after playing the original Resident Evil. 28 YEARS on the other hand is the complete opposite, it costed $60 million to make and that's not even getting into it's large scale marketing campaign across Europe with plenty of merchandise. Its clearly aiming for the mass market, in fact it needs to do so if Garland and Boyle even hope to complete the "trilogy".
People aren't upset just because it's "different", they're disappointed because the trailer set up widely different expectations and because the final product just falls apart in the second half with ideas that just don't really work. Not only that, but it's not a standalone narrative prioritizing artistic merit or even a well told story, they're trying to upsell you on a series of films.
>>211758964>from the visionaries that brought you Spring Breakers…
>>211758604>it also had Cillian Hinds running around like a ninja at the end when he "became" the infected metaphorically. but its a classic so you watched it uncritically. It was a tad ridiculous at the time, yes, and anyone who's not a midwit made that remark or had similar thoughts on it. But you do know that similar phenomena can be manifested to different degrees, right? Murphy turning into a super killer is a tad out there but they otherwise managed to not be outrageous. Albino rape ninjas is beyond ridiculous.
>>211740747Given how they've treated the whole empathy for the "barbarians" and primitive living against militarily regimented society themes, I bet my ass the sequels will try to decimate British culture.
>>211758813>Calling "backstory" to such a rushed sequence>more an A24 "this character is a metaphor for sexism" dudeYeah, the negress will make sure the next film is laden with that kind of shit, don't worry. A match made in heaven.
>>211759042$60 million might include both of the first two films. there's not money splashed all over the screen and they shot it all on phones again.
>>211756047The masks? It's to prepare the kids for when they have to look for if someone is infected.
>>211759098>they otherwise managed to not be outrageous. Albino rape ninjas is beyond ridiculous.it sounds like it might be... LE SUBJECTIVE.
>the negress will make sure the next film is laden with that kind of shitanon directors without writing credits don't write movies. given that both of the first two movies have already been filmed they just probably got a second director in so Boyle wouldn't drop dead from exhaustion.
>>211759263wild level of cope
>>211759263>it sounds like it might be... LE SUBJECTIVE.>using retarded plebbit-talk to avoid providing an argumentLook, if you really don't think there's an evident difference in verisimilitude with those two approaches, there's nothing we can tell your retarded ass to stop you from being obnoxiously stupid.
>>211759263>anon directors without writing credits don't write movies.Tell me how you know nothing about how a film is made without telling me you know nothing about how a film is made.
>>211733512 (OP)You're one stupid son of a bitch
>>211759263>anon directors without writing credits don't write movies. given that both of the first two movies have already been filmed they just probably got a second director in so Boyle wouldn't drop dead from exhaustion.I wish I could go back to being as naive as you
>>211759623>>211759565I'm actually just really touched that you have so much faith in Alex Garland's writing that you'd view any changes to it as inherently a bad thing.
>>211758762>he never gets killed because the doctor feels bad for him or some shit.I think the Doctor likes studying the infected(non-lethal morphine, covered in iodine so they'll ignore him) and didn't want to disrupt the local power dynamic. Maybe the Alphas are a positive influence on the infected since outside of that Alpha who lost his pack we don't see the infected suiciding into fortifications like in 28 Days. Given he puts both infected and non-infected skulls in the Boner Temple maybe he feels some sympathy towards them.
>>211759950The issue is the opposite. The mediocre to poor writing was saved by the cinematography, especially in the opening 30 minutes or so.
>>211760127>covered in iodine so they'll ignore himIt helps stave off the infection. They certainly don't ignore him, as the uberjeet was trying to rip his spine out of his body.
>>211760187>The mediocre to poor writing was saved by the cinematography,Meh, barely. There are some remarkable moments, yeah, but they're sparse.
>>211758762>Samson is a pakistani>Make the zombies pakis>Add pro-English imagery of defence against zombies (pakis)Thats fine
>>211760278The cinematography in the fields with the blue skies and lands of the north was fucking kino stop being a try hard faggot
Do ATJ and Ralph Fiennes hang dong? Or is it only the alpha zombies?
>>211756832It feels more like commentary on Brexit with the UK being isolated from the rest of Europe/World
>>211760347>"There are some remarkable moments, yeah, but they're sparse.">noooo, there's these handful of sequences that are amazingWell, yeah. What didn't you understand?
>>211760490All the infected hang dong
>>211752926>8 swedes Seriously the actor that played the last survivor needed a moment to get into character. When he first said his name he said it with a german accent, swedes don't say Rs like that. I thought he was supposed to be a german soldier. Every other time he says his name after that he does it normally
