It's a bad movie that repeatedly spells out how smart and deep it thinks it is to the audience (complete with hitting you over the head with continuous voice-over). It's pretentiously overwrought to the point it's both condescending and masturbatory. Given the above, it's impossible to be filtered by it and only a complete retard afflicted by Dunning-Kruger can walk away from it feeling like others missed out on what the film was doing.

Space monkeys and moon pirates but the voice-over assures us it's thoughtful and exploring heavy themes. What about the father/son relationship though! Sorry but no, OP. If you liked it there's a high chance you're just dumb.

You'd have been mad without it though. You'd just rage that Brad Pitt was stoic and quiet the whole time and you were confused what was happening, what he was thinking, you don't understand what was the point blah blah. It's not like he's traveling with a companion he can discuss it all with to clue you in.

I liked the depressing "vibe" of the movie. I get what they were going for. Humans yearning to find meaning further and further outside of themselves yet still having the same violent nature. But so much of the realism and space physics was messed up, I found it distracting. My memory is vague, but like that scene where there's a fist fight during the launch from Mars and they're weightless? But the ship is producing thrust? Or using a small jetpack to pull away from Neptune, a fucking gas giant? There were other things too.

Yeah, that part was a little confusing. But on rewatch, he used the spinning radar antenna to give him thrust towards his ship, used part of the hull as a shield against microasteroids, then used the jetpack to give a little delta-V to meetup with the ship. So he wasn't really getting away from Neptune with the jetpack, just matching orbits with his ship which could take him back to Earth

Life is great UNTIL the lil blob alien morphs into a killer starfish.
the monster looks stupid, it doesn't make sense that the team of hardened astronaut/scientists would be terrified of it to the degree where they fall apart crying and screwing up.
would've been way better if the creature was like the thing where it gets more and more human the more it absorbs(but in a spooky sped up evolution kinda way), if the creature preferentially targeted organs initially but then started going after brains and finally if the scientists had a betrayal subplot where one of them is secretly a doomer and fucks up just coz he wants the creature to make it to earth and destroy a large part of the planet.
even better if the doomer scientist is american and wants it to land on america - ups the stakes and tension and also gives retards a political point to latch onto

This movie has some ice background story elements, I can see that the worldbuilding could lead to some intresting stories that arent explored (enough) in the movie itself. Unfortunetly thats it - other than that its a hard scifi heart of darkness reboot and it soft, as in not soft reboot, but soft version of the grime movie, like a soft porn.
Also, brad cant act and this movie is a perfect example of it, just like angelina, they both are models, not actors. His range is stuck between a jarhead or retarded lony.
Another thing that totaly screw this movie for me is that the plot "just happens", it felt like the main character is just expiriencing the long cutscene. Bard goes on space walk, explosion happens to him, people tell him to go to luna, some raiders attack him, he goes on mission, moneky attacks him, he goes on mission, crew attack him, he goes on station, father attacks him.
The whole movie feels like hes sort of just a pushover like a fucking forrest gump in space level of thinking and agenda.
The daddy issues that people that like this movie have, arent their worst problem, its the shit taste for thinking that its a great flick executionwise and that the brad is a good actor.

Brad Pitt's acting is based on presence and charisma. He's not known for range or disappearing into roles. Ad Astra somehow did the impossible and almost rendered Pitt a charisma vacuum. This is because the character is so one-note, le stoic, and Pitt's performance thereby comes off almost as shallow as the film's attempts at theme.

Hes expressions are akin to the "your dog just died" guy, dont throw it on the script, because good actor can work wonders even with terrible script, even with bad directions he can convey what he feels about the story - just like tommy le jones, which gave a better performance with/wheres my check vibe throw in as a bonus.
>hes not known for the range
Nigga, we are speaking about actors and how good they are, brad is not a character actor, if you dont have any range and youre marketed as a hollywood star, than you fall into role of pretty boi that chicks want to look at.
Bradd had couple good roles when he was young (always retarded/loony characters) then he branched of to jarheads. Thats it, he cant play for shit, he dont have charisma, he cant act - he can do 2 types of character and I think it only comes with good directing/script/dialogs.
I liked the guy but all of his past 2000 movies are filled with subpar to bad performance on his part.

It's totally different from moon in that it's not an purely introspective journey type of movie, but an actual external journey through space (although it's paralleled with an inner journey but the latter doesn't do too much, it's pretty basic). It has awesome setpieces, all mentioned many times in this thread. The visuals are very good, the narration is needless and is only there so the most financially important audience for this movie wouldn't fall asleep halfway, hopefully, we need a director's cut.
Haven't watched cloverfield.

nolan was always a hack desu. his best movies were comprised of an IP which already has a great amount of the work and story done already (dark knight trilogy) and he deserve credit for that, they are genuinely some of the best capeshit movies made to date. but all his original screenplays were shit, his remake of insomnia was inferior to the original. everything from inception onward is mediocre, not the worst movies ever but he gets way too much acclaim from pseuds. he will not be remembered as a great director from this era of cinema.

i mean that's their whole gimmick, rewatchability, the way it's structured, there's more to understand each rewatch, that element of their story structure still doesn't make them all time great films. same reason that movie primer is constantly shilled as kino, it has a gimmicky story structure that makes it le heckin mindfuck. dont get me wrong, those two movies are good movies, but you seeing inception 20 times just means it really hit for you, in a very subjective way. i've seen happy gilmore and billy madison more times than that but i dont even know who the director of either one is.

the prestige is decent too. nolan overall has more good movies than bad ones, but i still think he isn't the visionary some people try to make him out to be. he's just a competent director that gets a lot of money to produce his movies, but memento, tenent, inception, prestige, interstellar, they all rely heavily on a gimmicky plot device.

Depends on what you want. It's not star wars. It's not super action packed laser pew pew booms. You might enjoy it more if you don't expect too much. It's in the same family of pretentious midwit movies like Crash. It's not so bad it's good or anything, although there's dumb shit to laugh at, and it's Brad Pitt at his most boring. The voice over, where the writer/director keeps hitting you over the head with how deep he thinks the material is gets pretty grating but the visuals are decent. If you can't get past the pretense the movie is a 4/10 but if being talked down to constantly by a midwit who obviously doesn't respect his audience doesn't bother you--5/10. It's not memorable at all though--save for the out place moon pirates and space chimps.
