So firstly, he won't risk that information ever being known by anybody else, and secondly he doesn't want people asking about it at all.

Ned is an honorable man, who is willing to sacrifice the blow to his reputation and relationship with Cat in order to what is right and protect the life of his nephew.
He didn't have a real relationship with Cat until after he'd returned from the war. Their marriage was political, was only made sincere later after they'd lived together.
