A song of ice and fire was originally planned as a trilogy with time gaps in between the books

the first book grew into three books, a game of thrones, a clash of kings and a storm of swords.

he later abdandoned the idea of a time skip and instead opted to write a mega prologue to catch everyone up on what had happened in the 5 years between the original book 1 and book 2.

that mega prologue grew into a whole book and then two, a feast for crows and a dance with dragons.

so the first part of his proposed trilogy became 5 books, how many more do you think the planned upcoming two books are going to get split up into? assuming any of it gets finished

Great, you got to see the end of the dullest franchise in the history of movie franchises? Seriously each episode following the boy wizard and his pals from Hogwarts Academy as they fight assorted villains has been indistinguishable from the others. Aside from the gloomy imagery, the seriesโ€™ only consistency has been its lack of excitement and ineffective use of special effects, all to make magic unmagical, to make action seem inert.

Perhaps the die was cast when Rowling vetoed the idea of Spielberg directing the series; she made sure the series would never be mistaken for a work of art that meant anything to anybody?just ridiculously profitable cross-promotion for her books. The Harry Potter series might be anti-Christian (or not), but itโ€™s certainly the anti-James Bond series in its refusal of wonder, beauty and excitement. No one wants to face that fact. Now, thankfully, they no longer have to.

> a-at least the books were good though

"No!" The writing is dreadful; the book was terrible. As I read, I noticed that every time a character went for a walk, the author wrote instead that the character "stretched his legs."

I began marking on the back of an envelope every time that phrase was repeated. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Rowling's mind is so governed by cliches and dead metaphors that she has no other style of writing. Later I read a lavish, loving review of Harry Potter by the same Stephen King. He wrote something to the effect of, "If these kids are reading Harry Potter at 11 or 12, then when they get older they will go on to read Stephen King." And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you read "Harry Potter" you are, in fact, trained to read Stephen King.

Except for him there isn't another epic series to move on to, either he finishes it himself, gives it to someone he thinks will do a good job, or his estate sells it to someone he may or may not approve of. Seems like the best option is to get away from it, but still see it done before he dies.

GRRM likely doesn't even have outlines and we already know now how he intends the story to end (Danny goes insane - Brann ends up King). But he's written himself into a fucking mess of 12 different plotlines without enough living characters to see them to logical conclusions.

I don't think the story could be finished without feeling extremely contrived or filled with plotholes

>without enough living characters
With way too many characters you mean. It's one thing D&D struggled with, GRRM gave them too many random useless people that had no influence on the plot but were just there. So they had to start killing people off. Same with all the branching plotlines that didn't seem to be going anywhere and GRRM had nothing really in mind for them way back when he gave them the notes such as everything about Dorne and the Iron Island's Kraken stuff.

If someone broken into GRRM;s house, photographed all his notes, scanned them, then gave them + the first 5 books as context to Gemini or chatgpt (whichever has the longer context window) then you could probably tell an LLM to finish the next two books and there's a decent chance you'd get something about 70-80% as good as if he wrote it himself.

GRRM has already done the hard work of making the characters likeable and establishing their personalities. now we just need to know what happens with the rest of the plot and chatgpt can take care of imitating the decent but not impressive writing style.

All men grow conservative in their old age, meaning that as they reach the end of their lives, their rebellions become the ossified tradition which they love, and they must then watch those things face the same fate that they cruelly subjected to their fathers' worlds. This breaks the hearts of many, who realize in their own way that this cycle of betrayal and uprooting is the true fruit of their youthful rebellions.

Martin watches now as everything he built his worldview on is being ripped out, it must be like being gutted, the sudden terrible feeling of intestines rushing over one's thighs, the sense of emptiness, of realizing that there is nothing there. The revelation that the whole of his world-historic view was in fact resentment, and that as he has aged, he has become his father, now to be subjected to the same knife he so gleefully stuck in his father's back.

Imagine being so broken by the world, by things that don't actually matter at all to your art. This was the mistake of the 20th century, and it is being met with grim reward in the 21st.

The Unsullied are a completely retarded idea in the books, as well - castrated boys who, by some miracle, grow up into healthy men instead of half-cripples, trained in a SINGLE fighting style all using the SAME WEAPON and NOTHING ELSE.

They would be wiped out by any semi-professional army in the Antiquity. A Medieval military 1/3 their size would outright massacre them.

Anon, he's never hidden at being a rabid leftist. He's also obviously mentally deficient, like clinging to the "ASOIAF is actually a post-apocalyptic science fiction setting." GRRM has stated, over and over, in no uncertain terms that no, this is all fantasy, the magic is real, the seasons being weird have a supernatural explanation, and what does the autist do? Play word games and semantics WITH THE CREATOR OF THE SETTING to try and prove than no, he's right.

His early videos were good because they were based on long supported theories written out by much smarter people. As soon as he started making original claims, he went full retard.

I've seen at least a dozen "how I would have done it" diatribes from random shits on the internet that rewrote and reframed the TV show narrative - largely by adding back in a few plotlines from the books Dumb & Dumber cut out with their natural conclusions and by making Dany's descent into madness take more than five fucking minutes - that would be good enough to form the basis for the end of the novels. People are acting like Ol' Gurm has created a narrative so complex not even God himself could unpick its threads, but it's just a fucking fantasy story. One of the high-volume writers like Sanderson could shart out the last two or three tomes in a weekend, probably not *quite* to the same level as if the fatman himself bothered to finish, but much closer to that than the shitty TV show.

But the reality is the books are in a vastly different place than the show when they left behind the existing book material.

Obviously Jon is Rhaegar and Lyanna's child, but there are still ways that even this, the central mystery, can be recontextualized in dramatic or surprising ways.

its obvious why he's having difficulty writing it
because he's created a very detailed and complex story with a couple dozen POVs and plotlines and subplots and he has to seed it with lots of mysteries that surprise the reader

its now more complex than ever, and he still feels the need to surprise people after the show has already presented some of his ideas and made them stinky and hated

the show went to shit because it abandoned his worldbuilding and setups to immediately have a few big battles as quickly as possible and end it

No one cares because there's no attention to detail or overarching plan in the Game of Thrones books and it shows.
The appeal of GoT has always been that it's gratuitous pulp slop written by a guy who pays particular attention to writing despicable characters.
D&D gravitated to the lowest, most depraved source material, like fish to water, and Martin is shilled as an author of any artistic significance.

AI will do it better and faster and even be able to find a way to release multiple endings so everyone is satisfied. It could probably do it right now quite frankly. It's a joke to think he's still a necessary part of the process when he has now become the biggest bottleneck to it.

The grandfather of fantasy who came up with elves and dwarves and dragons? Even if you don't like his books you have to acknowledge his importance.

>Does he hate his fans or what?
I think it's a mixture of embarrassment for feeling like he can't adequately continue the books with the bar set so high turning into very mild contempt towards the fans and simply realizing he's rich and old and he doesn't have to do anything he doesn't want

>I did begin a story placed about 100 years after the Downfall, but it proved both sinister and depressing. Since we are dealing with Men, it is inevitable that we should be concerned with the most regrettable feature of their nature: their quick satiety with good. So that the people of Gondor in times of peace, justice and prosperity, would become discontented and restless โ€” while the dynasts descended from Aragorn would become just kings and governors โ€” like Denethor or worse. I found that even so early there was an outcrop of revolutionary plots, about a centre of secret Satanistic religion; while Gondorian boys were playing at being Orcs and going around doing damage. I could have written a 'thriller' about the plot and its discovery and overthrow โ€” but it would have been just that. Not worth doing.

The blue wizards Eru sent to the east started a bunch of dark cults that Aragornโ€™s son would have to stomp out. Tolkien got about 30 pages in when he realized it would be shit and decided against it.

Why do you want something so badly you don't care that the author isn't involved?

This is so wrong. I can't believe people like GoT so much that they'll settle for more content no matter who or 'what' conjures it.

Without George it doesn't exist. He's the master of it. Even if someone else took over why would you want that? I really don't understand you people.
There's nothing I love so much that I'd accept a lesser version of it from some other creator.

No. He's the only one who matters. Who the fuck are you and where do you get the ego to suggest that it's bigger than him and that you or anyone else gets to weigh in on what is or isn't "a proper resolution"? LOL, you don't get a say in this at all.

ONLY George can write the ending and whatever ending he writes is inherently proper. That's all there is to it. Those are the rules here. Are you a fucking idiot?

the books also repeat over and over again that the Unsullied make up for the physical weakness of eunuchs by being mindbroken into never fleeing from battle. Their iron discipline makes up for not being able to 1:1 match the physical ability of their foes because in medieval warfare most armies break and run before they've even taken 50% casualties, while the Unsullied will ALWAYS fight to the death

Because Jon is a Targaryen, and has a rightful claim to the throne, and his presence could be interpreted as conspiracy against the usurped throne, and get Ned's entire family killed.

So firstly, he won't risk that information ever being known by anybody else, and secondly he doesn't want people asking about it at all.

Ned is an honorable man, who is willing to sacrifice the blow to his reputation and relationship with Cat in order to what is right and protect the life of his nephew.
He didn't have a real relationship with Cat until after he'd returned from the war. Their marriage was political, was only made sincere later after they'd lived together.
