To be honest, yes, at first I tried whiskey in my early 20s to appear cool to my peers, but it only took 2-3 times before I learned to actually enjoy it for what it is, and it did not take long for me to start experimenting with different single malts and enjoying them in the privacy of my home. I'm so glad I was able to finally quit. I drank HARD for over 20 years. Blacked out almost every night after about 4 of those years. Just needed more and more and more.

And even after 7 years sober I still crave the feeling it used to give me. But it's just a demon now. No enjoyment left. I guzzle the stuff until I can't stand up, I don't remember anything and then I'm ill for days.
Booze gave me decades of good times, but it took so much more. And still I have to actively remind myself that it was poison destroying my body and mind.

Somehow I never got in trouble with the law. Lots of very close calls. One time I was hammered on the highway late night, no traffic, and a state trooper pulled behind me. Shadowed me a 1/2 a mile and flipped his lights on. I guess my reflexes were quick enough and my driving fluid enough that after I pulled into the breakdown lane and decelerate he broke off and blew right past me. He was fishing and almost caught someone way over the legal limit. I swore I’d never drive drunk again until the next weekend when it was inconvenient not to.

I 'celebrated' one year sober today after 7 years of multiple failed sobriety attempts, and inpatient rehab stint, daily vodka drinking that had hit the handle a day mark at the end. I have not experienced fun or joy in that time. Haven't gotten laid. Lost all ability to socialise or talk to women. Gotten /fit/ and have more money than I've ever had, but for what. My drinking history sounds almost exactly like yours and I just hit 9 months sober. I know I have it beat because I feel nothing but gratitude that the nightmare is over, rather than "boo hoo, I have to live without booze"
Another positive milestone I've hit is that my empathy for addicts has mostly faded. You meet these losers in rehab and recovery who reminisce about and glorify the "good old days" of using. They still think it's "cool." "I'm a rockstar because I shoot herion!" Ive come to feel contempt for them. No, being a drunk or an addict isn't cool or fun or romantic. You're a fucking loser (not necessarily talking about you, poster).
I could go on and on about how things like hard work, responsibility etc are helpful. Long story short, being sober is better, thank God.

Usually I take a few days off work for my birthday, and I like to start my day with a nice irish coffee. My birthday is in early February, so its usually cold as fuck out, and its the kind of drink that will warm your bones.
