Objectively, were there good ideas that came from this trilogy?
I think crossguard lightsaber is kind of cool.

A Stormtrooper who switches sides was a good concept for a character.

It's funny that the black guy had the most potential for a character, and they squandered it within 10 minutes of introducing him.

my biggest hot take is that almost all the issues the Last Jedi had were because they were having to follow up on the threads left behind by The Force Awakens, even Abrams couldn't have delivered a real follow up to it
having Luke living in seclusion in TFA means TLJ has to come up with a good reason as to why he was there and not helping his best friend Han, and there are few options that don't make Luke look like a coward. Closing himself off from the force and portraying it like he believes it's the best option is the only way to justify why Abrams put him on an island doing nothing for a decade
TLJ had some unforced errors but I'll take aiming high and missing over shiny pandering like Abrams did

biggest actual issue with TLJ was it squandering the one good arc set up in TFA which was Finn the former stormtrooper becoming a resistance member and potential force user
TFA already had him teetering too close to just whooping and hollering like a monkey and TLJ just took it the rest of the way

I liked most of the ideas from The Last Jedi.

I think the Rebels' attempt at government being a useless demilitarized state that really only concerns itself with the core worlds while leaving everybody else to fend for themselves was a neat divergence from the prior EU. Wish it were expanded more.

The ideas from the Last Jedi were fine just poorly executed and also in the wrong trilogy that made it seem out of place.

The best idea was in the second movie with this whole yin and yang shit, how both sides of the force are important and that Jedi and Sith were ultimately wrong about the nature of the force.
This is what the trilogy should be about, really. At least it would be something new.

it would not even be remotely new, it would be beating one of the deadest horses in star wars, just about every other piece of star wars media since the 90s has been "grey jedi" bullshit and it has sucked almost every time.

>Luke having doubts as a master after Ben goes to the Dark Side, due to him being a relative and one of his first students, feeling like a failure and that he can't train the new order of Jedi etc. and then finding redemption through successfully training a new Jedi who is the hero of the trilogy
>A relation of Palpatine feeling ostrasized and ashamed due to being related to the big evil emperor, and them fighting against the expectation that they must be evil as they're also a Palpatine.

Neither were actually executed well but they were good ideas for sequels. A major issue was a lack of plan, and also randomly switching directors. Neither of these ideas were planned, Rian just randomly decided to do the first, and JJ decided to randomly do the second.
