it got popular on DVD when the kids who grew up with Star Wars discovered it

I think I must have watched Spaceballs as a kid before I saw the original movies. I did watch it way too many times as a kid tbqh.

it was funny for its time, but it's been left behind.
Parody videos made by people on YouTube/internet have outclassed it. if you want to watch funny star wars videos, you have a plethora of options, most of which pack more jokes per minute than space balls
