I loved this movie, its rich in subtext and imagery. If you squint hard enough you can actually see the medieval fantasy movie barely hiding in the background.

So you got the young squire from a small village traversing the English mainland with a bow and arrow in order to bring his mother to a mysterious wizard/witch doctor in order to cure her of her unknown illness.

Along the way they hide in castle ruins and churches and they even encounter a foul-mouthed, nordic viking warrior that helps them on their quest. They fight these monsters that are, lets be real, really fantasy like. You got the worm-eating crawlers, the huge orc-like alphas, and ravens appear as like a dark motif for these evil that lurk the lands.

Then the bone temple - I mean holy shit this is pure fantasy imagery. Needs no explanation.

INfact the entire movie is rife with occult/fantasy symbolism. Everything is just fantastical like in a medieval hero's journey.

Then at the end, the young hero is rescued by warrior monks (Jimmy from the intro) dressed like the teletubbies. They use eastern melee weapons combined and have heavy religious imagery.

I loved this movie. Im sure there's more details I missed but to me its pretty obviously like one of those old school dark fantasy adventures like Excalibur (1981), Conan the barbarian and The Navigator: A medieval odyssey (1988) - This last movie funny enough is also set in the same area.

Keep in mind the setting of 28 Years Later is also HEAVILY rife in mythological/fantasy significance. Lindisfarne/Newcastle area was where the Viking Age started, and now it’s a last bastion.28 Years is set in the area where civilization first fell into chaos as well as reborn.

I will post my brief review before reading the thread. Just got back from it.
The first third is a straightforward zombie movie with a cool premise.
The second two thirds is a strange relationship/ character growth thing that kind of makes no sense and I didn't care about.
There is lots of strange surreal things to it which kept it interesting, scene by scene, even if the overall plot was screwed. This was a characteristic of the first movie, which was also enjoyable to watch even if it was retarded in various ways.
Watching it in the theater, on things that make stuff more intense, was quite an experience and on the whole I enjoyed it. However. It felt like they didn't know what to do after the first act, and let some millennial SJW women try to make it some profound character meditation on life and death that amounted to nothing substantial.

The main kid the story follows is too young to make a good story. He's constantly tripping over his own feet and is a secondary character in every shot he is in. But everyone else is also stupid, how does a patrol boat patrolling an island nation full of zombies possibly not have escape rafts? Why didn't they stay on the coast until they were rescued? No coastal boat is ever leaving port for patrol through dangerous waters without escape boats. I'm really not here to watch a movie with some bed ridden person who can't remember her own family who's highlight in the movie is delivering a zombie's child in the back of a ruined bus. After 28 years nobody on the island has even worked out crossbows, traps, or nailbombs? How have they named the big zombies but but the one person who has found a way to deal with them effectively is the witch doctor? But other than that pretty average movie 5/10.

In Night they pretty much organize after 24 hours and just decimate the undead with sporadic outbreaks afterward, so much so things are still "functional" for a few weeks/months after the intial outbreak.
Dawn tackles the breakdown of society afterwards where it's apparent the problems are much deeper than they initially thought and communications and public services start to break down, people start to flee and orginizations start to disband
Even then, when they fly over some of the counties they can see people having a blast, but they'd inevitably fall to the same fate.
