Honestly it gets dark almost right away, kids books I read in the 90s always had potential for fucked up content. But then again this was before the internet went truly mainstream.

I think the hardest part of an Animorphs adaptation today would be that the books don't easily slot into any target audience that exists today. You'd have to seriously rewrite dialogue and relationships to aim it adults and current kid culture doesn't usually veer this dark.

We might see an Animorphs reboot now that Goosebumps and Are You Afraid Of The Dark have both had shows and films. Personally, I am still waiting for a Bailey's Kids show.

By dark I refer to sending retards to die as a distraction for example. Perhaps if it for an older audience it could have had Game of Thrones viewers. I think that going by target audience we would have to wait for at least another decade since this newer generation seem to dislike all of the degeneracy and depression in media now. I read somewhere that the author avoided describing any of the kids' physical appearances in close detail because he didn't want the reader to slot them into any familiar stereotypes--"the tomboy", "the nerd", etc. They were obviously visualized for the illustrations but even those changed pretty considerably over the course of the books.

The penultimate peril is the finale to the main saga. The End was more of an epilogue and kind of a meta commentary on the whole series. And it’s the best one.
