as soon as i stood up from my seat at the cinema i knew i was gonna come back home to read reviews and see everyone extremely divided on it, some calling it a masterpiece some calling it dogshit and both having sort of reasonable grounds to think one way or the other
it's an extremely divisive film, like there were scenes i truly liked but could also legitimately put myself in the shoes of someone who would shit all over the same scenes because they could be interpreted quite differently.
Like the kid kissing the skull, you can see it as a symbolic take on how even the meaning of death, mourning and how you say goodbye to dead people gets twisted and changes due to the circumstances, or you can perfectly see it as some cheap bizarre shock value thing.
If art is to be considered a question mark then this movie nailed it because it has plenty to think about, be it for praising it or for shitting on it. For that alone I think there is value in watching it.

it has a few nice bits but that's the only merit i can give besides the good acting
tonally it tried to be four different films at once and was a handful of subplots tied together with no real start or end point beyond "today my son becomes a man"

it's alright. 6.5/7 depending on the part of the movie. First two parts really felt like a nice zombie move then it kinda just completely shifted with the doctor and the flying jimmies.
it might be better when viewed together with the next movie they are obviously doing instead of being cliffhangered like a nigger overall worth the ~15 bucks i spent

Well of course it makes much more sense to keep a place quarantined and blockaded for decades rather than just nuking it to prevent the world from ending if containment ever happens to be broken.

I thought the ending was a big F U to the British public. Like saying "You're so scared of these fake monsters in movies, but you ignored the real monster in real life, so he is a real monster, in your movie, now will you care?"

The movie opened with the kids watching Teletubbies and the parents getting merced the original infection takes place in 02 savilles Crimes weren’t revealed until 2011. In that world saville is still seen as a boss and kids would definitely emulate him and the tv they grew up watching. I think it makes perfect sense the mainland is a weird crazy place after 28 years.

Felt like there was a lot of subtext people are missing. Basically was the story of a semi modern society interacting with a more savage one. Picked up a lot of Roman interacting with the Picts even threw a Viking in there for a short time as well. The north has always been untamed and the doctor was basically a version of a Celtic shaman creepy bones and all. I feel next movie the go more south and deal with chavs and jimmy saville in the more civilized areas.

this "tonal shift" argument is so prevalent the more i read discussion about this movie, yet it's such a fucking brainlet take
yes, the plot of act 1 and act 2 deals with and develops in different ways, yes, the themes of both acts are pretty different, yes the movie isn't just an action packed thriller with cars blowing up and niggerman driving a police car extremely fast through new york, but what's the mystery there?
The themes were there and they were clear enough (liked them or not that's a whole other discussion), but just the fact that the themes were different and the "tone shifted" doesn't say shit about whether it was good or not

Honestly everyone is confused by the Jimmy Savilles but I just took it as the logical contrast to the “civilization” of the village to demonstrate the variety of ways in which people survive and cling on to specific aesthetic and behavioral aspects of the past in the wake of societal collapse. Football hooligans and chavs are basically the opposite of the rustic communal life of the island, but they’re both finding degrees of success

right, now tell me why is it that the father completely abandons his family? why is it only at the end when he learns his son is alive he feels the need to go after them? tell me how a kid manages to trick the tower guard and then is able to walk his sick mum out no problem, or the pregnant infected, or somehow the virus mutating to now be repelled by iodine, or the kid realized he wasn't cut out for hunting in the mainland and then suddenly has what it takes? weeks is a more consistent film and that also falls on tropes of people doing dumb shit lmao cope harder faggot the movie was dog shit and so are you for defending it

sure thing faggot
>why is it that the father completely abandons his family? why is it only at the end when he learns his son is alive he feels the need to go after them?
so you missed the part at the very start where they go out and they literally have a grave for everyone who tried to be a hero and go outside to save someone, and the old lady tells them to abandon hope for any rescue?
>tell me how a kid manages to trick the tower guard
did you not watch the fucking movie? they have limited resources and their barn is burning, that's a major fucking crisis in an isolated agrarian setting, is the tower guard supposed to read his mind and know the kid is bullshitting him? the door is not that hard to open, and no one is gonna chase them either because they basically committed suicide by going out.
Let me ask you instead, say the guard magically didn't panic and figured him out and caught him, wouldn't that be way more bullshit by a whole fucking order of magnitude?
>then is able to walk his sick mum out no problem
mum has brain cancer, that means she's cuckoo but doesn't mean she needs a wheelchair to walk
>the pregnant infected
they need to reproduce somehow, i thought it was clear enough since film 1 that rage virus =/= zombie shit, no rotten wombs or vaginas
>somehow the virus mutating to now be repelled by iodine
this was just something the doctor found out with trial and error, i don't even get why this is a problem for you, iodine has antiseptic properties, it ain't rocket science
>the kid realized he wasn't cut out for hunting in the mainland and then suddenly has what it takes?
now that's a more interesting point to discuss, it baffled me a bit as well, i do agree he was too young and the whole "canonical character development moment" justification doesn't quite cut it

I figured out a way to make it kino (Danny Boyle will kick himself if he reads this)
>The flashback scene is in 8mm film
>The island is filmed with the best modern digital cameras
>The further inland they travel, the farther back in time we go in digital camera quality gets until it is back to the 28 days later camera in deepest infected territory

The kid was trained very well his nerves fucked him and he was scared shitless being outside the wall for the first time. He conquered his fear a bit and as such his training came through. It was shown that they are trained to shoot well while young and would wear masks with arrows in the head to try and desensitize them but the real thing is different.

and you're telling me a father would just sit there and let it be? not even a 5 minute clip to show his reaction and decision to stay? yeah fuck off
>say the guard magically didn't panic and figured him out and caught him, wouldn't that be way more bullshit by a whole fucking order of magnitude?
no actually it would be realistic because the tower guard had orders to follow, if the fire was that serious the kid would be grabbing a bucket, not running to get extra hands
>mum has brain cancer, that means she's cuckoo but doesn't mean she needs a wheelchair to walk
right but despite being out of it and being shown as being asleep she magically wakes up and goes rambo and then back to sleep, then wakes up and remembers the event with a "did i do that?" look upon her face
>they need to reproduce somehow, i thought it was clear enough since film 1 that rage virus =/= zombie shit, no rotten wombs or vaginas
never before have infected been shown to reproduce, their only concern is to eat and spread the rage, i never said zombie shit but the fact is the virus would very likely be hereditary
>i don't even get why this is a problem for you
because it's a throwaway lore bit, "hey guys i happen to have a working antidote but nobody will ever get it oh well"

the best part of this movie was when you realize the outside world moved on

>ot even a 5 minute clip to show his reaction and decision to stay?
so your problem is not that the dad didn't go look for them, but that they didn't show his reaction? Fair point, I would have liked to see it for sure, but it's not critical to the plot so I wouldn't say that's enough to discredit the whole of act 2
>no actually it would be realistic because the tower guard had orders to follow
how many barn fires do you think happened for the last 28 years in that village for the guy to respond with perfect and sound reasoning to an unexpected situation? do you think there's been a particularly high amount of infected swimming through the sea and invading their village in those 28 years? More likely than not nothing fucking happens for 99.9% of the time, why would the guard decide to stay on his post no matter what?
>she magically wakes up and goes rambo and then back to sleep
yeah agreed that part was silly, fair point
>never before have infected been shown to reproduce
so? there's no reason for them not to, if you wanna get scientific there's the whole viruses mutate to become less lethal with time because dead hosts do not help them spread etc
>the fact is the virus would very likely be hereditary
read some literature on blood placenta barrier if you're interested, did you know covid for instance has a very low transmission rate from mother to fetus and even if the fetus is affected it barely does anything? Plenty of pathogens can get past, but the placenta is pretty robust immunological barrier by nature
>because it's a throwaway lore bit
so the problem is not that iodine acts against the virus, but that it's mentioned then does not affect the plot in any meaningful way? well, point taken, i just saw it as the doctor finding it out too little too late after society was already fucked, but it's again a rather minor point to argue about

Ok but all the infected died in less than 2 months in the original. Then they moved 15k people back in, who were then infected in a 2nd outbreak and completely exterminated by the Americans.

Didn’t the kid become a carrier as well and end up fucking France up to though? Also we only saw London in weeks and they were trying to take back the city and failed we had no idea what was happening elsewhere. Hell you can make the argument that the ones that died in the city did so initially because they didn’t have any stable living food. In years we clearly see them surviving off of worms and deer.

I believe that ending scene was for a direct sequel that never happened. This movie at least confirms Europe was not infected.

The point im making is this movie is a standalone, a totally different story told 28 years after some virus known as rage. That's why the infected are so completely different. The very few connections are basically Easter eggs

you've got the UK quarantined but then paris literally gets nuked to keep it contained to the UK and and somehow NATO hasn't been violently overthrown yet... and it also raises the question of why not just nuke the fucking UK too? or proactively scour it again, this time with proper door locks to stop wandering husbands? the rest of the world is 1:1 to ours apparently so they could send in a bunch of drones and clean the entire thing up in weeks. they infected are literally just cavemen. it would be like target practice for a real war somewhere.

it's also hilarious that the rest of the world simply moved on when britain got deleted, somehow this issue got put on the back burner and everyone was content to let it stabilize for decades... you'd have countless expatriates and survivors telling anglo-flavored holocaust stories or just foreigners wanting to see what really happened with the epic colonization project, but I guess they all quietly seethed and got over it. somehow they're scared enough to accept anyone setting foot in the UK being exiled there to suffer permanently, but wouldn't support a second nuke and clean-up campaign to make sure it's truly gone forever.

The film looks like they had a main idea
then someone tried to patch that idea with some other less smart ideas till they fill the runtime
finally two persons have a talk:
-what if this film is a success. we may need another one
-b-but it's already filmed and edited. If you're trying to add something there's only room at the end and we also don't have any money left
-shut the front doooor. I used the cheapest "cgi" to put some wind turbines before.
-ok, add your new ending.
