Why do I get the feeling this is better than '28 Weeks' but worse than '28 Days'?

It really can't be compared and has nothing to do with the originals. Like seriously, the first two are companion pieces, even if you dont like Weeks. This movie is a total stand alone and retcons the first 2 almost entirely.

I wouldn't say it retcons days and weeks, it's dismissive of the latter by quickly mentioning that the infection got contained to britain, so really only the very last scene of weeks can be ignored.
but more in general about this movie, it totally feels more like a script inspired by days than a direct sequel, the setting, the characters and even the zombies are very different, this is its own thing and will have to be analyzed only until this new trilogy gets completed.

Both movies confirm the infected all die out within 5 weeks of the infection. In the beginning of the first film they are shown to be in an almost catatonic state until they hear noise. Then they investigate and kill if its a person.

They don't eat or drink, most of the infected who even made it to week 5 would have been infected semi recently.

In 28 Weeks the infected are long dead, its just a matter of disposing of all bodies, rescuing the survivors and recolonizing. The infection only restarts because of some extremely rare genetic mutation that makes some bitch a carrier who then passes it to her husband after some terrible plot holes.

This movie has them as nomadic roaming barbarians, breeding and hunting. Totally different story.
