It all started in the 1990's when he hired the Keldysh for an expedition to the Titanic in preparation for filming his movie, after the expedition was over he kept them on the payroll and used the Keldysh and the MIR submersibles for his movie. Some of the Titanic shots were really filmed down at the wreck using both subs. One to act as a camera platform and the other one with floodlights, to light the scenes.

Over the years he may have spent more time on the Titanic then the people who were onboard did during their voyage.

There are bizzarely, genetically brave people and I don't want to cope by discounting how vastly more brave some people just happen to be. But in his case I really feel like he was such an egomaniac he just thought it wouldn't happen. He had this narrative in his mind where he's going to be rewarded and worshipped for the risks he's taking, to the point that he kind of believed that's how the universe mechanically worked. If you're daring enough and deserving enough, one of the elect pioneers, you don't fail. You do risky things and get treated like you're incredible for risking death, but it won't actually happen because the universe is obligated to reward you for the "risk" by making it so there's no actual risk.

First the air problem then the food problem then finally the toilet problem and I bet they didnt want to sniff .
