But in his case I really feel like he was such an egomaniac he just thought it wouldn't happen. He had this narrative in his mind where he's going to be rewarded and worshipped for the risks he's taking, to the point that he kind of believed that's how the universe mechanically worked. If you're daring enough and deserving enough, one of the elect pioneers, you don't fail. You do risky things and get treated like you're incredible for risking death, but it won't actually happen because the universe is obligated to reward you for the "risk" by making it so there's no actual risk.
