Did George Lucas overestimate the political literacy of his fanbase with this movie? Especially to his amerimutt audience.

Sadly he wasn't aware that the average Star Wars fan is beyond retarded.
That was his only mistake.

He just wanted to do something different with Star Wars, possibly because he was misguided by EU tackling ideas unlike the original movies.

To be completely fair to the americunts the political shit doesn't pay off until to get to Revenge of the Sith. If you were to just watch Phantom Menace in isolation (which people did back in 1999) it is kinda vague as to what Palpatine's overall plan is and why the Trade Federation are doing any of it. If you watch all 3 back-to-back it makes perfect sense, has a great fucking pay-off with Palpatine becoming the Emperor and is one of the best through-lines of the prequels but in isolation back in 1999 I can see why some people were a bit lost.

The heavy political shit is still only about 10-15 minutes worth of the movie though and anyone complaining that the whole film was like that is just lying and complaining for the sake of complaining

He underestimated it. The Trade Federation blockade makes no fucking sense, because there's not a single line of dialogue explaining why people are dying on Naboo, because of said blockade. Wtf is happening down there? Food shortages? Epidemic, pandemic? Fucking what? Everyone I knew that saw it back then, asked what the Chinese frogs were actually doing. One line of dialogue could have fixed that, and Lucas just decides to omit it.

No, we all understood the basics of what it was doing, but were turned off that the movie turned out to be another tired political cartoon that tastes just as annoying as the news. You go in to see Star Wars and itโ€™s some liberal boomer yelling at the news. I get enough of this at home and in school

Yeah it's so weird why would people on Naboo starve after being invaded and put into camps.
Absolutely zero sense.

My 9-year-old self hated it because it was news and news was what your parents put on instead of cartoons or Star Wars, so when I go to see Star Wars and thereโ€™s news in it, I know someoneโ€™s fucking with me

Making it both more childish and also more political than the originals was definitely an interesting choice. I'm not sure who Lucas wanted the audience to be.

He's always ahead of his time. He believed vague handwaving at puddle-deep mysticism and politics would convince audiences that something profound was being said - didn't quite land with the millennials, but bullseyed with zoomers.
