I unironically love this movie and really dont understand why some people hate it (because they never say). It looks great, Nastassja and Malcolm both put in good performances, the soundtrack is bangin', lots of nudity, and the cool New Orleans atmosphere already puts it about 99% of the slop that gets talked about on this board. Sure the incest thing is weird and there is a goofy line here or there but it's a slightly artsy 80s horror movie, not Tarkovsky.

It just kind of doesn't work very well as a story, the plot and characters are kind of an undercooked mess. There's some good ideas maybe, but they are lifted straight from the 40's movie that does have a decent plot and characters. 40's Irena is actually believable as a real human being, Kinski isn't.

I like elements of it though but it's kind of a Lynch's Dune situation where it does a lot right, but it has some unforgivable fuckups that make it hard to appreciate as a whole. It's an interesting movie, not a good one.

For one I simply don't agree about Kinski's performance, she is incredible in this and not just because she gets naked. She has electrifying screen presence, and toes the line between naive innocence and flirtatious very well before exploding into white hot sexuality. Picking at plot holes kind of misses the point, film is Schrader's delirious coke fueled fantasy and he was obsessed with Nastassja irl, thats why it's so stylized. It operates on that sort of dream logic, its not supposed to be a totally rational realistic story.
At least that's how I read it.

I think there is some interesting stuff written between the lines when it comes to McDowell's character. For instance, Irena still has enough control in leopard form to not kill Oliver after she sleeps with him, so to what extent is Paul's tendency to kill his own psychopathy and secretly enjoying it instead of his condition? Was his outward religiousity a genuine attempt to find redemption that failed, or simply cover? The film is full of little details like that and throwaway lines that kept me speculating.

Watched it fairly recently. A good hidden gemmy, kino cinematography, kino special effects, kino music. I'm not a big plot guy, so whatever issues it has with the plot didn't bother me too much. I liked Kinski in it and I thought McDowell was good too. Honestly, out of all the movies directed by Paul Schrader I've seen, it was probably my favorite. Hardcore and Mishima are good, but I connected more with this one, there's a shlocky slasher element to it that I liked. That ending shot with the freeze frames and the David Bowie song is pure kinographie.

Glad you liked it! I think it deserves to be mentioned alongside The Thing and The Fly when it comes to 80's horror remakes. I wouldn't quite put it above Mishima, but it is definitely top 3 Schrader. Also I have the soundtrack on vinyl, its so damn good.
