• Kirk is not an obscure character. His death was somewhere around a century earlier. Very little knowledge that's a century old remains obscure or classified, if our time is any sort of reference.
• They're Starfleet officers, some with security clearances. They would have access to more info.
• Data didn't try to keep his artistic leanings secret. They're most likely on the Federation's equivalent of Instagram and YouTube.
• Unless you were a completely different kind of kid than I was, you gleefully sought out secret/forbidden knowledge, including stuff that was supposed to be classified. I had unearthed a lot of stuff in my childhood that remained formally "classified" for another couple of decades. You think the junior Starfleet officers are any different?
• Even ChatGPT admits Starfleet may declassify famous events over time.
