/emg/ - Eighties Movies General
Movies from the 1980s (80-89) that range from "yeah, it's alright" to "totally rad!". Or otherwise 4-10 stars movies that you enjoy.
Make a recommendation, take a recommendation. 80s were kino when it came to Horror, Action and SciFi, some decent drama's and comedies mixed in.
>Anyway, got any 80s movies that are your guilty pleasures?
>Anything aside from the obvious hits?

Explorers was a 'friends go on an adventure' movie. Flight of the Navigator was about the childhood anxiety over growing up. The main flaw in Explorers is that had a muddled ending. That was somewhat forgivable since the movie was about the journey more than the destination.

I am neither Gen X nor a woman but Labyrinth is one of my all time favorites. I really miss the imaginative, other-worldly fantasies of the 80s. They barely make fantasy now, and when they do it's just faux LotR or GoT grimdark, tryhard and subversive. I guess that's just how cinema is now in general.

>Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-o-rama (1988)
It's a solid 4/10. Incredible theme song I could listen to on repeat, with great introductory scenes (and lots of boobies). Then when they get to the mall and uncover the jinn monster, it turns to mostly shit. It's often too dark to see anything and the audio gets all fucked up. Maybe it was the torrent rip I watched but I kind of doubt it. Cheap amateur movies tend to have that issue. Linnea Quigley is in it.
>Class of Nuke Em High (1986)
For me it's a 9/10 and the best Troma movie (not saying much but you know). The soundtrack is great and the Cretins are fucking awesome. I especially like Muffy, she's so sexy I want her to step on me. The best scene is when they fake a seizure, beat up an old lady, and take her purse lol. Nuclear radiated weed causing mutant retard babies flushed down the sewer that survives and gets revenge on the high school is the coolest plot ever. Also, in the scene where they go to the college frat party, there's an Alessi Brothers poster in the attic and the Alessi Brothers are a great band.

The studio wanted more comedy, so they had Sean come back and shoot all those intersecuiters(?). Which was perfect to see how much he grew as a person from the experience. Now he basically says "fuck you!" to life.

The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension (1984) - A quirky sci-fi comedy about a neurosurgeon/rock star fighting interdimensional aliens. Known for its oddball humor and stellar cast (Peter Weller, John Lithgow).

Miracle Mile (1988) - A tense, apocalyptic thriller about a man who learns a nuclear strike is imminent and tries to save his new love in Los Angeles. Underrated for its real-time suspense.

The Hidden (1987) - A sci-fi action flick where an alien cop (Kyle MacLachlan) hunts a body-hopping extraterrestrial criminal. Blends buddy-cop vibes with horror.

Mystery Train (1989) - Jim Jarmusch’s anthology film set in Memphis, weaving three stories about music, outsiders, and Elvis. A gem for indie film fans.

One Crazy Summer (1986) - A zany comedy starring John Cusack as an aspiring cartoonist on a wild summer vacation. Overshadowed by Cusack’s bigger hits but full of 80s charm.

The Last Dragon (1985) - A martial arts comedy with a Motown flair, following a young Harlem fighter seeking β€œthe glow.” A cult favorite for its mix of kung fu and funk.

Night of the Comet (1984) - A sci-fi horror-comedy about two Valley girls surviving a comet that turns most people into zombies. Cheesy but lovable.

Street Smart (1987) - A gritty crime drama starring Christopher Reeve as a journalist caught in a web of lies with a pimp (Morgan Freeman in a breakout role). Often overlooked for its intense performances.

Tampopo (1985) - A Japanese β€œramen western” about a woman perfecting her noodle shop, with hilarious food-related vignettes. A unique comedy that’s a foodie’s delight.

Big Trouble in Little China (1986) - While somewhat known, this John Carpenter action-comedy with Kurt Russell as a trucker fighting mystical forces in Chinatown still flies under the radar for some. Pure 80s fun.
