Was watching andromeda, then started watching farscape, and already watched stargate. Is there a single one of these shows where the main characters arent crippled by extreme moral faggotry? Like a show where the main dudes are just in it for themselves. I like sci fi adventure but every one starts to feel samey and predictable when they always do whats right no matter what and save the day at their own expense.

dark matter is two eras away from the shows you mentioned but it does feature a crew where some of the characters get to act like scumbags from time to time. it's by no means devoid of moralfaggotry, but it is more like a show where 50% of the crew get to act like rigel or firefly jane pre-"character-development". the other 50% are moralfags to various degrees, some less obnoxious than others but you get satisfying moments where they get put in their place.

interesting, i can support cancelling atlantis but i can't support season 1 of SGU.
controversial individual but i can 100% guarantee dark matter isn't as soapy as sgu season 1 nor as grimdark as bsg. it's genuinely a fun original show which managed to establish a surprisingly rich and complex lore for the time it had. even the fact it was cancelled early doesn't sting as much because of how well it was able to develop its storylines.

I don't want to sound like a simp or anything but the Universe writers seemed super harsh on the female characters lol

>Chloe: Dad dies then spends an entire season facing impending death over alien mutation
>TJ: Baby gets killed, the 'vision' about it being sent to Eden by nice aliens turns out to be false, then gets *ALS*
>Ginn & Perry: Finally happy then get murdered. Survive as disembodied consciousnesses in the ship's computer and are happy again briefly before being shoved into quarantine (the implications of which are left completely vague) and immediately forgotten about
>Park: Gets her fucking eyes burnt out

for me it's the last SG-1 direct-to-DVD movie that was supposed to give a logical conclusion to that part of the franchise by revealing the existence of the Stargate to the public.
I'm still mad they couldn't even adapt it to comics (probably because they reused many plot points for SGU, they also did that with some of SGA S6 plots)
Anonymous No.211828163

That's true. SG-1 wasn't left as open-ended as SGA and SGU but it didn't really *end* properly. Just left off with SG-1 in the field exploring the galaxy as per usual only there's no big bad anymore.
Would've been nice if the characters had gotten some more conclusive 'where they ended up' stuff, like Carter becoming a General and Teal'C becoming leader of the Jaffa nation etc.

>Terrans are extremely opportunistic and want to acquire alien technologies at all costs
>they explore dozens of planets with daily missions
>eventually convince a few alien races to ally because they are outnumbered, whereas Terrans have plenty of cannon fodders
>in exchange aliens give Terrans access to more advanced technologies
>all of the most brilliant scientists of the planet are recruited to understand and develop these alien techs
>eventually find an Ancient alien city filled with preserved alien tech ready to be used
but even t the end of the series Terrans never have more than 4 operational spaceships at any time. sneaky commando attacks and hacking the aliens' own tech is still their main tactic.

if we were to be very real the Terrans' tech progression actually feels WAY slower than it could have. only a handful of technologies (mostly the spaceship-related ones) become actual staples, whereas a ton of very powerful one-off techs are ignored without any proper justification.
if they had fewer episodes to fill the Stargate series could have been written with a very different tone, with fewer random alien techs but with Terrans trying to militarise every single one of them in an even more opportunistic way. it would feel more like an espionnage series with grayer morals.

Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie didn't start actually writing full episodes until halfway through season 1. They did that quite well with all the characters, which really gave a sense of progression to the whole setting.

I think you're thinking of Marks. Who shows up as a Lieutenant on Prometheus then reappears as a Captain then finally a Major.
Reynolds' first appearance is a Major at area 51 then reappears a few years later he's a Colonel and SG team leader.
There's also Pierce, who starts off as a Major but his last appearance is Colonel in charge of the Alpha Site.
Carter of course goes up from Captain to Major to Lt Col then full Colonel across the course of the show. Kind of poetic I guess that she ends up the same rank that O'Neill started the series at.

To be fair the underground aryans weren't just 'racists' they were also actively pumping poison up into the atmosphere with the intention of wiping out all other life on the planet which is why the 'breeders' kept sending wave after wave of bombers at them despite suffering enormous casualty rates in the process (iirc they mention that 'most' bombers in every single wave are destroyed).

But while that may justify letting them be destroyed, letting the guy splatter against the iris when so much could've been learned from him was definitely a stupid moment.

Working in an armed military capacity is bound to change someone, so after several years of this being his daily job I would expect him to improve his skills and become more competent. Mallozzi said (offhand, jokingly) it was translator microbes and then in one of the books they had it as DHDs doing translating (Earth doesn't have a DHD, which is why it didn't work in the film).

Or if you want to treat the show as an office-style documentary, then the aliens don't speak english, they cut out the "learning the language part", and the producers dub over the alien language in English to make it easier for the audience to understand (leaving some in where appropriate for dramatic effect like O'Neill's Ancient phase)

They had a yearly service plan and they gave it away to the first 100 people that signed up free. Then they called it a bust 6 months in and refunded everyone, even those people that got it free. They probably saw what people were willing to pay for box sets and thought they'd be able to get those people to spend that money on a streaming service for that show instead. Since box sets have to go through retail channels where each level is taking a cut, streaming would do away with that revenue sharing. The capital and operational costs of streaming has turned out to be bigger than what most companies expected, especially for high volume users. Then there's resistance from buyers at not getting a physical item that's their property forever without reoccurring costs.

I love de Boer and can't fault her at all. She was great with what she had to work with, though I wasn't crazy about the little girl lost unconfident Dax.

But personally I would have fired Farrell very early on. She couldn't speak technobabble and sound like she had the slightest clue what she was talking about. Trying to find something to do with her and pairing her up with Worf was just fucking painful. Her Klingon shit was the crap she strugged with the most.

Her character was obviously designed to be killed off if necessary, and it was gutless of them not to do it when it was obvious it wasn't working - especially when the Klingon shit would have given them plenty of opportunity. Bitch couldn't take a bat'leth to her Curzon-influenced overconfident arse while fighting a Klingon twice her size?

I had no problem with the concept or the way she looked. The Curzon history with Sisko and the 'old man' shit was a good idea, but they should have passed the torch at most by the end of season 2. Would have given Sisko more to do and more to do with their friendship.

de Boer could have done way more with it if given it earlier, and even then it would have been fun if they killed Dax a couple of times over the series, so the audience was familiar with her past incarnations and could see their influence, and her struggling with them.

Ideally you'd have some other Trillfags kicking around the station so you got to see them in their pre-joined character for at least a season before getting their switch flipped to the Daxified version - and what actor wouldn't love that shit?

Total missed opportunity, and for what? To give Terry fucking Farrell job stability? Bitch was just as stilted and shit in that fucking sitcom she did after, but she'd be fine doing modelling or whatever the fuck she was doing before.

How could you play a character like that and never bother actually trying to understand at least some basics. Not doing that is like some kind of reverse-Method Acting but only applies to science. Like if you were going to play a cop and shoot guns, you'd learn something and haul your arse down to the range at least once right? Having a Dax that struggled with herself from the start would have been GREAT, because suddenly we have a character with all the experience/wisdom and none of the confidence, a perfect foil to early Bashir who was the exact opposite. Both competent of course but having them meet in the middle would also have been a great way for them to connect organically (if you know what I mean)

I can't. That would have been good, but I can see what they were doing with Jadzia - just a pity about the casting.

It was impossible to hate cute little pixie cut Ezri at the end of the day, and that would have worked fine if she'd had more time for her character to go somewhere, but right at the end it just wasn't the best choice.

Again getting rid of Farrell early on would have been the best move because you could establish that a symbiont gives you uber-confidence and all that crap, then kill her off, emergency transplant, and then have confused Ezri get her shit together over a couple of seasons for a complete arc. Her death would be tragic, and then have a best-of-both-worlds trained Trill that has Jadzia's Curzon-confidence and Ezri's cute demure aspects, and so you get like a confident science bitch who is girly, not annoying and is not going to get herself killed by being stupid trying to fight hand to hand with evil Martok from the mirror universe or whatever.
ie. You get to see their best traits integrated into the final result instead of just being told about their past lives.

I actually wonder if they had something like that in mind originally and they were just following the original plan when there obviously wasn't enough time. Maybe they figured if they got another season they could just stick the landing with Ezri.

Season 7 of SG1 was honestly the worst of the entire series. Richard Dean Anderson had completely checked out of filming. He was a glorified special guest that would sit in a room and "react" to things happening while Teal'C, Carter and Jackson actually went around doing stuff. RDA was also guilty of this to a lesser extent in season 6 as well. The last season he was fully committed was season 5.

To be fair when RDA took the job he probably didn't expect it to last more than three or four seasons just to tide him over until retirement.

I don't really blame RDA. His motivations were entirely understandable. He had spent his entire adult life working like an animal. Him taking time to go raise his daughter and be a father/husband is an honorable thing to do. I blame the writers/show runners/networks for not just cutting him loose of the leading role(which they finally did in season 8).

S7 was a glorious sendoff, it had lots of dumb goofy episodes (which were fun btw) but the entire Anubis arc was basically a crescendo of the entire franchise and the battle over antarctica still looks good, especially for a tv show.
I didn't even notice RDA checking out, I was too busy being invested and entertained. S8 was a pretty tired but also satisfying and more definitively final season tying up EVERY loose end (threads, literally), and I just ignore the last two since they add very little.
HOWEVER, I will say that I really like the early seasons as well. The mystery was still there when the stargate could go ANYWHERE and the galaxy was still infinite. Then it turned into nah the GOOLD rule everything lmao oh shit replicatorz!!!

>SGU never happened.
I liked it. Sad that it will never be finished, but at least they had sense enough to give season 2 something of a conclusion with the hibernation pods. We can just imagine Eli fixed the last pod and now they're all just hibernating to the edge of the universe. Hell, they could even restart the series from where they left off with all the same actors just by saying the pods malfunctioned and didn't slow down the aging process as much as they should, making everyone age by 15 years. Any actors who can't return, you just say their pod failed and killed them or that they have to stay in it (giving the actor a chance to come back).

I liked the idea of a more serious Stargate show but they leaned into it way too hard in the first season. The series has always had a bit of humor but they went full BSG and it didn't fit the show. By the time the curse corrected in season 2 it was too late as the network was only looking at S1 viewer data.

I still think if they were given a third season it would have picked up in popularity quickly, assuming it maintained the same tone and quality of season 2. I don't blame anyone at the time for giving up on the show early into season 1, though. I recently watched it for the first time and even knowing it was only 2 seasons and wanting to complete the whole Stargate franchise it was hard to keep myself going through all of season 1, so I can't imagine what it must have been like watching it week to week and expecting it to stay the same forever. BUT if it had been given a third season I bet it would have picked up more viewers and gotten even more seasons, and today it would be the kind of show where people say, "It's really good, just power through season 1 and it's worth it! Skip season 1 if you have to, it gets so much better!"

Oh I know. It's just how back then it felt like the franchise had been on the air forever yet now the SGU finale feels just like yesterday.

It's also interesting to see the huge advancement in CGI quality from the start of SG-1 to the end of SGU.
The advancement between the end of SGU and now is very little by comparison.

An accurate portrayal of femoid behaviour when their men go off to fight.

Though in Sha're's case she was possessed by a goa'uld so I'm not sure if 'cucked' really applied. Bitch literally had no control over her actions, she was basically raped.
