I'm convinced this is a pure example of algorithm driven "creativity". Add a scene that is so out of place and goofy that it's guaranteed to get talked about and made into memes. It's artistically bankrupt but it's a brilliant marketing strategy.

Americans like me can't get it. If Fred Rogers turned out to be a serial child molester and rapist, and everyone found out and were shocked to the core, THEN someone made a creature with the Fred Rogers Gang fighting zombies and inviting a kid to join, then we'd get it.

It was close to dying out in 28 weeks later so they wanted to repopulate the country. It goes wrong and we see zombies running around in Paris in the end. But it seems they got it under control.
The question is why Anglos weren't able to contain it until the next film.
