It seems like that even back in 2016, Trekkies were generally much more opposed to the dumbing-down of Star Trek. The JJ films weren't exactly liked, there was big controversy over implying that Sulu gay was in Beyond. Fast forward to today, Trekkies are eagerly consuming total brainless slop like SNW and STD and throwing tantrums if the shows don't have enough queers in them. Trekkies went from obsessing over canon minutiae (down to the smallest bridge set details) to arguing that canon shouldn't matter at all.

We know that Lower Drecks originally wanted to have a dream Captain Kirk cameo (the writers confirmed this) and they sent Shatner letters and a script. So what did Shatner do? Two weeks later he appears at convention panel and says "the new stuff is making Roddenberry turn in his grave" in reaction to the script he got to read. He doesn't name anyone, he doesn't name the show, but it's clear that he's not interested in the material they gave him. He thinks it's bad and unfunny and antithetical to Star Trek.
So what do Lower Drecks writers do being the spiteful faggots they are? They brought in Takei and shit all over Kirk in the final episode.

Shatner appeared on My Little Pony because he digs that it's a positive show about good "people" and friendship. Basically very in line with Star Trek ideals. He got to read one Lower Drecks script and he instantly understood how mean-spirited and cynical it all is.

Within its own economic structure, the Federation is "left wing" I guess but even that isn't accurate because their economy is post-scarcity which is an X factor that completely negates the argument over the use of state resources (which is what the left/right economic debate is ultimately about).
