The JJ films weren't exactly liked, there was big controversy over implying that Sulu gay was in Beyond. Fast forward to today, Trekkies are eagerly consuming total brainless slop like SNW and STD and throwing tantrums if the shows don't have enough queers in them. Trekkies went from obsessing over canon minutiae (down to the smallest bridge set details) to arguing that canon shouldn't matter at all.
