For the cast to be good, it NEEDS to be a mix of people with very little in common, ideally with different flavours of autism
S2 is the most controversial season because the cast weren't that good, it's probably damaged further by the whole "everyone is a plant" twist, but even without that the cast didn't have an interesting dynamic.
JC was compelling as the outsider and Cole was fascinating with his bizarre mannerisms and massive ego, Jimmy was very talkative and prone to meltdowns, Brian was "the popular guy", TJ stammered and sperged a lot, Tay would soichud out too much, Meg would do nothing, but ultimately all of these people (besides JC) could be described as "edgy MDE fans in their 20s", it lacked the different flavours of autism that made every other season great, and nobody in the cast really stood out to me, nor could they do anything interesting, whether production was telling them to do it or not.
The fact that S4 is also a "fan only" season but it's still enjoyable should be the final nail in the coffin that S2's cast was pretty bad and didn't have a compelling group dynamic, just Brian orbiting and dogpiling.
