This wasn't designed by men for little boys to enjoy. This was designed by a committee of moms for boys ages 1-4 because that's how they see male entertainment: juvenile. They don't pander to it because they don't care to understand it. This was never about connecting to the male audience. So no little boy with taste is actually going to want to see this. Elio doesn't look cool of heroic. He's wearing a stupid...thing I put my fruit in on his head. He looks stupid. His cape has lame looking shoulderpads. His eyepatch doesn't look cool and is a stupid color. A kid would rather have a cool looking scar across the eye or have an eye that has a superpower over being half-blind. He's down one whole eye already. That is a terrible handicap to want children to fantasize having.

I recall thinking the trailers for this didn't look as awful as usual. I think some of the alien designs seemed alright. But I'm far past the point of giving anything Disney the benefit of the doubt. I no longer have faith in their films meeting the bare minimum of what I can consider worthwhile so I won't bother unless one has very good word of mouth. And even then I rarely feel like going to a theater anymore. The one closest to me closed and they're all too expensive now.

For a movie about alien why did they put the MC front and center (and also as the titular character) instead of the mascot.
