Sort of. I liked all the seasons, but it felt like it tread water for a good portion of its run the same way a lot of modern serialized TV does. The first season is genuinely tense though.

first two seasons are actually good, I think it jumps the shark when Agent Petty dies but season 3 is still very very enjoyable because Wendy's brother is a great character

The final season had this strange position of being clearly in no way prepared to end the show, like a lot of final seasons when a show ends early. But simultaneously it seemed to have zero plan of where it was going and having obviously run out of steam. So it both just faffed about filling time til the season was over, and also did absolutely nothing to wrap up the show.

Then it just stopped.

it was like some metaphor for "old money" or whatever, or like people who buy into the political system where there are no consequences for your actions anymore because you're entrenched/untouchable. kind of a similar take as the American Psycho film i guess. there was probably supposed to be some longer feminist arc to it but they obviously had to cram like 2-3 seasons into 1 to finish the show quickly.

the whole thing with Ruth hooking up with the lady who used to own the restaurant, and the whole thing with the cartel guy dying and his mom or whatever taking over seemed to me like there was meant to be some larger feminist arc along with Wendy becoming the primary figure in the family doing bad shit instead of Marty. i'm actually kind of disappointed we never got to see it play out, it seemed like an anti-girlboss thing with two of the women being horrible people and two of them getting completely fucked over for trying to enter this space with "old money" types.

They both were going to kill each other. Jacob was going to kill Darlene because she was obviously too insane and making awful decisions, also was going to kill him. Darlene killed Jacob because he was going "too soft", being amicable with MARDY and was going to kill her.

Not really.
Every character makes retarded decisions and insane things just keep happening for utterly contrived reasons just to keep the stupid "misery porn" plot going.

Also i had to turn it off when it started with the gay sex subplot, which was quite early.

it's so obvious it was like a Game of Thrones thing where they were working backwards from a conclusion they had and basically had to teleport characters around and wave magic wands to make their motivations/the storylines fit the ending.

They seemed to land on "The Byrd family sacrifice their surrogate family member Ruth to protect themselves and that is a sign of how POWER CORRUPTS and stuff" as their big ending but then they get to it in the most contrived, rushed and haphazard way, and then of course the finale ends like four minutes later with another last minute plot tie-up which feels even more clumsy. They seemed to use their excuse of "well they are bad guys and the bad guys win in real life so that's social commentary you know" to avoid actually really tying up the arcs, if they existed, of the Byrd family characters. The result is other than the two major character deaths, both extremely rushed and contrived, it doesn't even feel like a series finale. In fact I seem to recall a lot of people saying that they thought there was another episode to come and were confused when that was it, end of the playlist on Netflix.

And here is a big ass reason it makes no sense, it was not what the originally outlined.

>When Mundy and the writers outlined Season 4, Ruth originally survived. Then Netflix ordered four more episodes.
>β€œWe had originally broken the end of 10 episodes, and we had the whole season broken and we’d even started writing it, then the order changed from 10 to 14. We knew it was going to be split up so that people were going to experience it where Episode 7 was going to end and Episode 8 was going to be a beginning again. So we kind of had to tear apart our whole season break and add story that felt like it was part of what we were doing and not just tacked on. So some things morphed a little bit when that happened.”
>In that original 10-episode plan, Javi (Alfonso Herrera) died at the very end of the series and Ruth survived. When the season was expanded, Mundy explained that Javi’s death was moved up, his mother Camila’s (VerΓ³nica FalcΓ³n) role was expanded, and it became clear that Ruth wouldn’t make it out alive.

Good old Netflix, ending the show on Season 4...then trying to get more or less two seasons out of Season 4 anyway by "splitting" it into two halves with more episodes, instead of the 10 episodes that the first three seasons each had and Season 4 had been planned to have.
