I can see why people do not like it. The trailers make you think its a non stop chase movie, similar to 28 Weeks Later. If I was to nitpick Id say the scenes of Spike with his mum are much inferior to Spike with his Dad, learning the land etc.

Im glad Boyle made the movie and developed the world 28 years later (on the basis the isles are left alone). Anyone else making this would repeat another 28 Weeks. I really hope the sequel goes into detail why Kelson chose a monastic life

There is no reason a movie about infected prime needed to make me marvel at what I was watching (causeway chase scene, absolutely beautiful), make my jaw drop (spinal removal in the tunnel, I've seen a lot of snuff and gore in my day but that was pretty cool), cry my eyes out (I lost my wife to cancer a few years ago and the doctors dialogue hit close), and then throw my hands up in confusion (Jimmy saville). The ending mostly. I felt ripped off by it when I saw it in theaters, since it just comes out of left field and feels like the movie should continue. It's grown on me since watching, I like it in both a serious and a goofy way. Not sure if it was intentional, but I think Jimmy's gang is supposed to be a parallel to the infected/alpha dynamic. All his gang members seemed to be frothing at the mouth to kill all the infected, and Jimmy was just as bloodthirsty, but he commanded them very similar to how the alpha screamed and let the pack go loose. Then you get the most viol not scene in the whole movie, and it is as gory as what a pack of infected would do to someone. But on top of this, plays into the point that it shows just how crazy people are on the main land, which I believe is also a main idea, maybe spike will get sucked into it and become insane, he seemed to have no strong reaction getting handed his mom's skull. No idea where the second movie is going to go with all this considering the director, but I think it'll be mildly interesting.

Not sure if anyone else interprets the movie this way, but I think the trilogy could be perceived as a cautionary tale in leaving home before maturation, being prideful and how the outside world can corrupt and mislead you without proper guidance. Spike had only gone out once with his dad, it is stated that he is even very young to be going out. It's shown that he is capable, but still needs more time under his dad's wing. He then goes out, leaves the safety and security of his village into the world due to anger and being prideful that HE can figure out a way to solve his mother's illness, and not his father, who has much more lived experience than him.

This is then proved in the fact that the journey is for nothing, since his mom had cancer and there is absolutely nothing that can be done about it. On top of this, he gets caught up with a madman of a doctor that decides to make towers of bones and skulls as some avant garde art piece that'll never be seen by anyone. This doctor then pumps him full of drugs, burns his mother alive, boils her body and returns her skull to him to contribute to his death monument. Spike is still a kid, and goes along with it since it is an adult telling him to do this, so it must be normal. Then the last scene shows him going off on his own into the mainland, nearly getting mauled to death by infected, and now here comes Jimmy and his gang. Kids that have been around on their own since the beginning of the outbreak. They had no guidance while maturing, and seemed to model themselves after a sex offender who lied and deceived. I think the death monument was just the tip of the iceberg in terms of spikes corruption, with Jimmy's gang bringing him further into the descent of depravity, and spike learning to perceive it as normal.

Sure, Jim becoming the angel of death is a bit over the top but it still stays in tone with the rest of the movie and then there's of course the basic comparison where uninfected are just the same as the infected. You can argue that Jim runs on pure adrenaline at that point which gives him extra energy and I know it's not the perfect excuse but far more believable than other Boyle stuff where he goes full experimental.

And Jim's rampage definitely wasn't seen as cartoony back then, it was groundbreaking in it's edginess and rawness. It's one of the factors that made the movie a huge success. There's a reason why In a house in a heartbeat is still so iconic that everyone uses it.
