I'm probably not going to watch it in theaters but I am a bit surprised that so many people seem to be dismissive of it. I didn't care for any of the guardians movies but I know even cape haters hold them in higher regard. Trailers make this look no worse than any of them so idk maybe nothing can revive the genre

We already had the perfect Superman movie with the Donner films, even all the subsequent movies decades later are heavily indebted to it. Returns was a soft remake of 1, Man of Steel was a hard remake of 1+2, and even this new movie just feels like a revamp of Donner but with a Gunn coat of paint.
Also I don't know how long this DCU will succeed before people get tired of Gunn's schtick. He doesn't seem to have much range as basically every superhero movie/show he makes is Guardians of the Galaxy again, even this new Superman movie has a similar team with the "Justice Gang". It reminds me of how people worshipped Joss Whedon for a while until he reshot Justice League and everyone turned on him. All it takes is 1 flop and people will give up on James Gunn too.

The only reason he put Starro in the movie was because he thought that Starro looked cute and goofy. That's it.
The Suicide Squad is the movie where the goofy looking characters that had no reason to look as goofy in the movie were all killed off in funny and embarrassing ways, because Gunn was purposely making fun of them because of goofy they looked dumb and goofy.
Meanwhile the characters that he liked and thought he could "salvage" all had their original look completely changed to look as tacticool and "cool" looking as possible, as Idris Alba character. Go look how he looked in the comics.
That's how i knew which character would die and which characters would survive.

all Batman characters are given extraordinary plot armor because they're popular to justify how they can hang out with characters like Superman and not be obliterated like a bug. It's how you get shit like Batman fighting Darkseid. Or Joker being some crazy mastermind who can threaten the world in some arcs despite being just an insane dude in a clown costume. I hate posts that start with “am I the only one that…” because the answer is always obviously not. But I know you’re not a redditor you’re just trying to start a Superman thread.

Anyhoo this would have piqued my interest if it was more of a standalone thing. But it doesn’t sit right with me is that this represents what the next 10 years of DC is purely going to be in visuals, style, and tone. Focusing on making one shared universe instead of one good product is a recipe for disaster and forgettability; pretty much speedrunning the MCU flopping. Also the Elseworlds stuff was a total lie by Gunn to appease contrarians. Obviously if this movie is a success The Batman 2 won’t be happening. Likewise there was no reason for a Henry Cavill movie to not exist as an Elseworlds thing but Gunn scrapped it because he doesn’t want competition. It’s not even a money issue because investors wouldn’t be difficult to find if WB didn’t want to shell out the whole 200m.

It should have take place in WWII
