The book was much better at explaining the various financial instruments and how the banks, hedge funds, and trading firms all interacted. The movie had to have a wider appeal so in order to get normies in theaters you have to explain it like you are explaining to a child and incorporate cameos from hot celebrity chicks.

This was my takeaway from the housing crash. It seems so simple, you can't keep leveraging debt on debt on debt infinitely, at some point somethings gotta break, a bubble's gotta burst. But the financial people behind all this would hand wave and say "oh it's very complicated, you just don't understand, this is all fine, this is just how it works". And sure enough, it really was all that simple and we would have to pay the piper eventually, and of course none of the people responsible suffered any consequences.

Not really, the problem is that they don't teach financial literacy to anyone and movies like The Big Short just sell a narrative that tells people what they want to hear.
The only message you ever hear is that debt is good and you should consume as much as humanly possible.
Most people aren't curious enough to want to understand how the financial system works and that's how they like it.
