Erich Von Stroheim's Greed. It sucks that 8-hrs of it are lost media but they are summed up nicely in 2-hrs in the modern 4-hr cut.

Everyone should watch it once and read up on the production to see how absolutely revolutionary this film was for its day (in the silent era of sound stages and local spots dressed up, Greed has scenes shot in the heart of Death Valley.) ImA great project to undertake would be to adapt Greed to a modern mini-series that is 10 1-hr episodes that tells the entire story.
