>When he plugs his Librem 15 notebook (running a Stage 1 installed Gentoo) via dual link DVI (video) and TOSLINK (audio) into the TV (custom firmware, patched over the serial port) and is almost ready to start the film, only it it is encoded with the latest H.265 with Scalable Main 10 Profile and thus requires a hotfix for libde265 which only exists on a 3rd party Portage overlay and which requires a recompilation of the kernel and a small change in the USE flags in /etc/portage/make.conf, so we should be ready to go in 20 minutes tops, meanwhile we can play a refreshing round of Kolf on herbstluftwm
>when it takes a mere additional 15 minutes because there's no audio because due to a weird corner case with the Opus 1.3.1 audio tracks in the Matroska container, and now he needs to demux and re-encode it to AAC, which sucks because it is a licensed codec, as far as encoder implementations are concerned, and thus needs to be installed beforehand, which, again, incurs minor changes on the USE flags

>Ohmygawd shut up, there he is!
>Ummm, anon?
Yes?
>Do you have some kinos we can watch?
Yes.
>But we tried the TV and it wasn't a smart TV... do you have apple TV or something?
No.
>But... how can we watch kinos?
*produces video cable*
>Unff... is that an HDMI cable? (girls start biting their lips and squirming)
Not quite. It is a DisplayPort to HDMI. You see, my HP Elitebook has DisplayPort output, but my TV, a 2010 HD Panasonic model without wifi capabilities, has HDMI input.
>yuhhhsss.... unnggg... (girls start rubbing themselves). Anon daddy? Can that cable do HDMI output to DisplayPort Input?
No. It is strictly for DisplayPort output from my HP Elitebook to my 2010 Panasonic HDTV. I made sure to match the output to input when purchasing the cable.
>(girls all now playing with themselves and moaning)

I want to set a few things straight. What you see here is not an HDMI cable, it is in fact a dual link DVI cable. Meaning, the sound is going over a separate cable, that would be the TOSLINK cable, an optical cable over which signals are transmitted using a Differential Manchester encoding. Nothing too fancy, but it is reliable.
As you can see, there is no "subwoofer" and no "surround" setup. Loudspeakers are a complex set of nonlinear equations to optimize for as it is - and that's true for even ONE speaker with the most trivial D'Appolito setup and with low slew rate crossovers. Two speakers will already introduce QUITE the challenge to optimize for a regular room, given the reflections and room modes created by them. No need to introduce another piece of (considerable) complification by adding a subwoofer. Moreover, you will find that my Tannoy Lancaster speakers already pack quite the punch.
The TV, yes. Behold the Sony XBR Trinitron KD-34XBR960. The Finest full HD CRT TV ever produced. The pinnacle of an era. The undisputed master. I don't believe in LCD, those abominations can't handle camera pans. This masterpiece of technology will be fed, as stated, with the DVI and TOSLINK cables.
The film we're watching? Ah. Admiral Nakhimov (1946), an unsung masterpiece by Vsevolod Pudovkin, set in the Crimean War.

...oh, and before the usual detractors come here saying that the Trinitron KD-34XBR960 doesn't take DVI as an A/V input, this is my DVI-to-YPbPr converter.

>Babe, what's the matter?
>this is a disaster, the audio is fucking AC-3, AC-3 audio on a fucking remux? How is that even possible
>maybe it'll be alright
>really? 640kbps split across 6 channels is "Alright"? We're talking about an average bitrate per channel below 110kbps
>o-oh..
>ahh thank god, I found a rip with DTS audio, get comfy it'll be done in a little over 2 hours from now

I literally had a girl over a month ago who had enough computer knowledge to find it odd I had 50+gb downloads. She's crazy and out of my life, but okay.
