hard to say what its about in this case.
could be just boredom more than the money.
but the money is also nice, meet some nice people that love you. get paid to scribble your name on paper. make enough money to have a free expensive dinner that night.
i would do it, its unfortunate that the money is a filtering tool of sorts, but oh well.

While it does seem shitty, I do get it. So many people try to flip autographs, taking shit to get signed by a celebrity they don't really give two shits about just so they can sell a $20 trinket for $500 on ebay, that putting up a price tag filters out a lot of those people and leaves you with people who probably actually want your autograph, or are at least willing to risk not making a profit from it.
Think of it this way
>have an acquaintance who you give shit to because you think they'll use it and enjoy having it
>find out they immediately turn around and sell all of it for FMV
Do you keep giving them shit for free, or do you start selling it to them, or do you start selling it yourself? Chances are good that people who do this probably aren't thinking "wow this guy is so nice, I appreciate his giving me stuff," they're probably thinking "wow this rube is giving me shit for free, when I can turn around and sell it for hundreds! What an idiot!"

Anonymous No.211959055 >>211959119 >>211964896 >>211982333

It's mostly an anti-scalping measure. If his price is low it's not going to magically increase the amount of autographs he can reasonably do an hour so all you're going to have is scalpers camping out or shoving people out of the way to get as many autographed photos at $20 a pop as possible to resell on ebay for a quick $200 each. If Hamill puts the price floor at $400 it fucks up the secondary market so the only people who are likely to be willing to pay for it is people who really really want it, which means less people in line to deal with and a more personalized message and time to actually chat with the person for a minute or two before moving on to the next guy.

It's not like he's making his money off those autographs anyway, they're just extra ontop of the money he's getting paid to attend the convention in the first place/contractual obligation.

Anonymous No.211959244 >>211960881

Yeah and scalpers will roll in with crews of dozens of people or entire extended families to bypass those restrictions. It's just easier to let the price point do the limiting. It's also why some celebs will opt to insist on an extremely personalized message, and use their own markers to ensure the recipient doesn't hand them one with water soluble ink that the personalized section can be wiped away. Scalping is a huge issue in the memorabilia market and makes conventions fucking gay for legit attendees and fans.

Everybody cries and shits their pants over this stuff for no reason other than jealousy. If you could sit your ass on a chair and make, idk, like $50,000 in one day by signing some photos, you would do it in a heartbeat with no questions asked.

Beyond that argument, as another anon said it's about supply and demand. Demand for Hamill signing photos is infinite at one of these cons. In order to make it fair to people who REALLY FUCKING WANT HIS Autograph there is a steep price attached, so that those people can line up and get their autograph before he goes home. The people who are just there to maybe make a quick buck from his signature or aren't that much a fan won't line up, making the line smaller and more manageable. You may think that he just signs a photo and says "fuck off" but I imagine at that price point he gives everyone at least a good 2 minutes or so to chat with him. After just 100 autographs that's over 3 hours, not counting his breaks and stuff.

Nobody would buy it then. Things have value assigned to them by the potential buyers. Most people won't pay $600 for a picture of Luke Skywalker with Mark's signature on it, so scalpers are not going to risk their $400 on maybe making $200. They WILL risk a measly $20 to make a quick $200 which most real fans of Mark likely would pay for at that rate.

My brother in Christ you played a wizard a million years ago on screen. How are you able to go to sleep at night knowing that you conned people out of lots of money just to take a photograph with you? That just feels so scummy. Photos should basically be like less than $50. Like dude thank you for coming out and for liking his one character all these years. I love and appreciate you. I hope what you took out of the character was things that pointed you toward the greatest good in the universe--Jesus. But paying this guy through the nose for a picture? Especially when it's been years and he's old as balls? Like come on now.
>I'm almost dead so get me while I last!
No, dude. It's a photo, not the second coming.

And just imagine that for a second. Imagine how much a meme that is. Think about caring so much about how a person writes their name that you'd collect them. These people are deities. They bend over and grunt when they squat and take a dump like the rest of us. Putting them on such a pedestal to the point where you're gawking at a basic skill like handwriting is sad, really.

I had to handle the queue for a Harrison Ford signing at a fan event in the early 00s, it was horrible. Star Wars fans are animals, so many of them tried to cut in line and two of them got into a fight over some cosplayer girl who was trying to ignore them while she waited for her autograph. Never again, I thought I had a sweet deal to do some backstage shit but it was just a hassle.

>tens of millions of dollars.
I grew up quite well off, not like filthy rich but my parents were comfortably wealthy. They ran into some bad luck in the 00s and lost most of it before dying so I ended up with squat. I'm doing OK, got a good job and an almost paid off apartment but I know with my career I'll never get to their previous level of wealth. Growing up Hollywood rich and then doing a normal job for the rest of your life or even just being a minor millionaire must be a similar downgrade for them.

depends on the place, like if you're at comics convention it's good manners to ask for the autograph on something they sell or sold previously. It's a nice bonus but I don't see the point of a standalone autograph if you're not selling it later on.
