Rome season 1 however is the best season of tv ever produced

S2 was already a step down and it was completely carried by Antony who dies SPOILER ALERT

I guess people say it was supposed to go all the way to Jesus somehow but I don't understand how that would work. Just watch or better yet read I, Claudius.

As a direct result of the cancellation since they had to jam a bunch of seasons into one with S2.
Currently rewatching and S1 was absolute kino. Somewhat dreading starting S2

Claudius is unwatchable for me, someone took a damaged VHS camera and went around a marble bathroom filming Brian Blessed perform his schtick. And it's less fun than it sounds.

>>212012147
After Caesar's death they should've immediately followed the Williams's Augustus book (which I heartily recommend to anyone reading this) but yeah with that crew it would've been as shit as S2 was. They introduced like 5 new actors besides Older Augustus and they were all abominably crap.

In a way early 2000s TV was gayer than it is today because they all thought they were being edgy and trendsetting by including a gay character so every show needed at least one gay subplot.

I did say in a way. If you were to literally compare the numbers modern TV is probably gayer but they put more emphasis on it back then.

Watched it recently, it was so entertaining that I would binge half a season a day. Why was it so entertaining? Not a single moment of slogging through filler dialogue or scenes where some politically correct character grandstands and pseudo breaks the fourth wall. Did we take it for granted? It has only been downhill from this.

It's a mid and degenerate series, I am halfway through season 1 and I'm not sure I should keep watching it for fear of more degeneracy.
The characters and costumes are good though, and that's it's only redeemable quality. It's clear anti Roman propaganda.

Yeah heโ€™s one of my favorite actors for sure

As long as weโ€™re here Iโ€™m gonna drop one final recc, this is an audio drama of the highest quality. Michael Sheen as Caligula is my favourite episode, they take the line that all the shit written about Caligula (by the senatorial class) is basically propaganda, thereโ€™s a great scene where Caligula says one of his infamous lines and thereโ€™s an awkward silence and he says โ€œI was just kidding lol.โ€ Really does make you think about ancient history and how we just have to take the whole thing on faith

>someone took a damaged VHS camera and went around a marble bathroom filming Brian Blessed perform his schtick. And it's less fun than it sounds.

The weird thing is that I agree with you 100% but youre also 110% dead wrong. First of all, Brian Blessed dies early. And the following intrigues are extremely well acted and written in a very intrusively engaging way, to the point where I can completely ignore the zero-budget production. John Hurt as Caligula should be hammy and dumb but hes just so creepy. I dont really care much about the blocking and directing going on but just the various conversations between the many characters are enough to just watch. And I like that so much happens between episodes and off camera that you actually have to think and listen when watching to understand. Its not a whole package show but the parts it does well it does better than any other show, so yeah.
But a scene like this
https://youtu.be/Da6cbuAfnbA?t=48
is simply just worth sitting through an entire episode

>Cato drew his sword from its sheath and stabbed himself below the breast. His thrust, however, was somewhat feeble... [and] he did not at once dispatch himself... His servants heard the noise and cried out, and his son at once ran in, together with his friends... [A] physician went to him and tried to replace his bowels, which remained uninjured, and to sew up the wound. Accordingly, when Cato recovered and became aware of this, he pushed the physician away, tore his bowels with his hands, rent the wound still more, and so died.

Pretty bad show to be honest despite some excellent actors.
Over reliance on ridiculous sex/violence/profanity. And it was shot really poorly, especially the framing, and the whole thing looked far too dark.

The second season was atrocious, especially that ending. By that last episode they had clearly given up.
