There's really not much to get. Star Trek, TNG, and the films created an interesting setting and DS9 is a story set within it.
If you think Trek was all about flying around space in a starship, well, you're just wrong. It was always about the stories, from the very beginning (The Cage). Exploration was just a means to an end to arrive at those stories.

What are they exploring in Court Martial or Measure of a Man exactly?

Some of the best Star Trek stories are bottle episodes where the crew doesn't even leave the ship so I've always thought that was kind of a silly distinction.

That's how Gene sold it to NBC, as Wagon Train in space.
Then he brought in The Cage and the NBC executive was furious and told him it was too cerebral and needed more fist fights.

Either way, just because TOS was Wagon Train, that doesn't mean a spin-off show couldn't be Gunsmoke in space. If Wagon Train had a spin-off that was set in a town and both were westerns, do you think anyone would've really said "this isn't REAL Wagon Train!"?

Like I said, I don't want to disparage ToS, but we've also got a question of quantity as well. Seven seasons of TNG, and as someone old enough to have seen the premier on television, I strongly defend the first season of tng.
I'd also argue that shit like the inner light is peak television. All good things is also one of the greatest finales of all time that captured everything that made trek great, and closed out an era (sure DS9 was ongoing, but it was doing its own thing, and voyager was still a few years out).

>McCoy
6", a good average human penis, representing the soul of the common man. More known for working with his hands.

Alright, why not.

>Bashir
4". His father couldn't afford the penis enhancement, leaving him with a flaccid, feminine penis.
>O'Brien
5", a good, respectable workman-like Irish penis. A "thick pink mast", angry-looking, definitely with a bulbous tip.
>Quark
1", just an acorn really. The penis isn't a particularly important sexual organ. HUGE balls, though, equal in proportion to the ear-to-head ratio.
>Worf
12 kellicams, a noble warrior's penis. Refined and dignified, ridged for her pleasure.
>Odo
172". If he gives his entire body mass over and shapeshifts into one gigantic penis of normal girth, this is the length that he can achieve. This freak is literally a tentacle monster. You don't even know what he does to Kira, some real La Blue Girl shit.
>Sisko
9", aggressive and in your face with goatee like pubic hair. A jazz man's penis, blessed by the Prophets.

Bonus penises:
>Damar
6", a Cardassian penis that knows its place in the hierarchy and respects the authority of the state.
>Weyoun
n/a, Vorta have cloaca.
>Garak
A suspiciously average 6" penis, could fit in anywhere. Very unassuming.
>Gul Dukat
Just an obscene penis, a 13" hammer of Cardassian superiority that is the envy of the galaxy. The penis of a man who did nothing wrong.

But the Star Trek: Lower Decks episode on DS9 was great. Maybe the concept just works better in an animated workplace comedy.

When Nog (the best friend of Sisko's son) wanted to join starfleet, Sisko tested whether Nog would steal from the cargo bay. Nog not only passed the test, but did so in record time. Sisko still refused to endorse Nog's application until after Nog disavowed Ferengi culture, saying that he didn't want to be a "good Ferengi".

This humiliation ritual pleased the Sisko and showed him that a house Ferengi or two can be tolerable as long as they undermine traditional Ferengi values and drink root beer.

Jeri Ryan's bodysuit being enhanced and padded is just well known at this point, and well, if you look at a lot of the extras from late TNG to ENT, you'll notice a ton of porn bimbos with giant fake tits. Pretty obvious what he was into.

once you start noticing it, its hard to not notice, falling into the trap of thinking about how said scene was put together instead of just being immersed in it happens with almost all visual media. For BSG I find this funny thing when the opposite happens and you realize you've been watching one take the whole time since you get so use to the constant cuts. So then that takes you out of it.

Yes, this exactly. Sisko's opinion of Nog turns around when Nog says that he wants to join starfleet because he wants to assimilate to federation culture instead of trying to be a good ferengi.

It is as if Worf were to say, "I want to be in starfleet because Klingon culture's obsession with honor and combat is destructive and counterproductive." That definitely ain't Worf, and people would tell him to be proud of his heritage instead.

Sisko explains himself very well here: cultural diversity ends the moment you put on that uniform and become part of the military hierarchy.
None of these people were drafted and they all knew what they were getting into.

Picard letting Worf off for killing someone outside of the line of duty was incredibly unrealistic and unmilitary. Even moreso by Starfleet's anti-violent philosophies.
There's no way Picard wouldn't be court martialed for letting Worf off with a simple reprimand.

I read between the lines and assumed Gowron's support of Worfs actions to starfleet was enough excuse for it to be handwaved by next episode.

It has the best cast of alien characters of any trek.
The writing is at least on par with TNG too.
There is more of an over arching plot but the vast majority of episodes are mostly self contained, but the characters also have a bit more room to grow because of this.
It's not flat out aping TNG like Voyager did, it is it's own thing, but it still understands TNG and builds from it.
It breaks some trek rules, but it understands those rules and what breaking them can achieve, unlike modern trek who just pisses on the rules then sets them on fire to... err I dunno why they do that actually.

It's a show that dares ask what the cost of maintaining paradise is without corrupting it too much. It's still very much the utopian Trek as we know it, but there are moments where a select few have to sully their hands so that the lives of everyone else can remain utopian.

NTA but S6 still has individual episodes that are great -- the ones that start to suck are the Behr-written "main story" episodes. The exit of Wolfe who was formerly his writing partner is definitely felt a lot. The serialized part of the show has less cohesion and it definitely ends on a very sour note.
S5 is the peak for sure.

The resolution could have been better, but collectively those episodes are good, and they give loads of screentime to all the best characters. Lots of Garak, Dukat and Weyoun
The season 7 finale is obviously far worse, if at least mostly inoffensive. If Dukat's storyline had ended when DS9 was retaken, that would have been likely for the better. At least the Dukat cult leader episode is hilarious if stupid I guess.
Also Rock and Shoals is one of the best episodes in the show.

Nah that scene when the bajoran woman gives birth to a half cardy baby is peak ham comedy.
You coulda put the seinfeld jingle over it and it would have won awards.
If you didn't find it funny due to some personal trauma then I'm sorry you had these laughs taken from you.

I was over it by then because I knew what was happening the second they showed that pregnant woman. What mostly upset me is the involvement of Kira

How blatant it is, how stupid it implies Dukat is (he coulda just scanned this bitch at any point of the pregnancy and known) and mixed with Alaimo's performance is hysterical.

I think it's amusing at best also I didn't like how out of character he acted in it really just cemented in that his time was over and the writers were saying fuck you to the viewers for ever enjoying him at all.

Fun fact, he's played by the latino guy who wants to rape a white boy and says "Give me some chun-chun!" in Blood in Blood Out.

The funniest part about it is that its an obvious character assassination episode, but you come out the other end just liking Dukat more because he's so much fun.

I'm sure most of the Hebrewistic people at Paramount still understand that TNG was a massive commercial success in the 90s, while DS9 and VOY were not. Even though it's different now and many viewers have come around on them.

DS9 has the highest highs and lowest lows of Trek (at least of the media that I still consider to be true Star Trek). When it's good it's fucking amazing but when it's not good, oh boy it's really really not good. Like the kind of stuff you feel embarassed watching

I agree it's not popular enough, especially from the perspective of some hollywood suit.
I feel like DS9 is the trek that gained the most popularity since old trek died though, I mean excluding TNG.

Back in the 90s the hierarchy went
>TNG

>TOS (it was seen as a joke)
It's still kinda like that except DS9 and VOY flipped and TOS is higher

Voyager isn't the best but it has plenty of really solid epidodes.
Id put counterpoint on the list of best trek episodes of all time. And plenty of good episodes.
Id rank voyager the lowest of the star trek series, but I dont hate it, and neither should you.
