>British "people" call a TV season a series. So a series has multiple series in it. They say things like "The first series, the second series" and so on.

Part of it comes down to how season came from how you would have a season of television, like the show being over the entire summer. You can do that with 22-26 episodes, not the 6 or 12 that British TV puts out.

It's a series of episodes. Only burgers are dumb enough to have to be told it's a limited series

>series Y makes sudden crazy change with new plot hooks compared to series X in order to keep engagement and buzz up so it doesn't look like a giant money sink and is cancelled
>series Z escalates even further

A lot of bong shows like to do this, and one anon said that in the long run, the downtime and production Hell most shows ran into was part of the fandom itself, mostly as an excuse to shitpost and speculate about random bullshit on the 'ol tellytext and cons. Red Dwarf was one of these shows, which you're supposed to watch with a mindset like MST3K, and less Star Trek, lest you start to notice that a bunch of plot shit happened offscreen/in a magazine interview column between series'

it's called a season here because of the network tv season that ran from september through to may each year
why would other countries that don't have a tv season call a run of episodes a season?

Back in the day at least, British shows didn't usually have to answer to sponsors and advertisers, so just made and shot sitcoms and that whenever the writer (often one bloke in a shed rather than 10 twats around a table like you'll find in America) whenever the script was ready. Whereas American shows have to stick to a strict season within their television schedule to make money for... well you know.

95% of people call it a season because we do what americans do. even broadcasters who are supposed to preserve the british language call them seasons.
