In the Japanese version, it was effectively a SAW trap built by some kind of computerized entity that was judging humans for their sins and wrongdoings. If they could solve the cube or atone in some way, they were released from the cube.

I can't believe they even made that version. Sure, the sequels to the original weren't perfect (although I have a soft spot for Cube Zero), but they were definitely better than that 2021 version.

OP asked. One of the character reveals that he worked on the cube, but he had no idea what it was at the time. One of the ladies goes on a sort of conspiracy theory rant that it was all planned by sinister corporate and government powers, but the guy reveals that no one knew what it even was.

The horror is one of a bureaucrat chimerical corpo-state chimera that blindly stumbles into a sort of holocaust by accident, not out of spite or hate or rational anti humanism. The sequels that explain it away as actually being a sinister plot miss this part of the horror and it neuters it.

Zoomers seem to be completely allergic to this concept. They NEED 12 hour lore breakdown videos about how the Cube was built, who funded it, what company made the traps, who was in charge of choosing the materials, what the construction workers had for lunch when they built Room #248, on and on.
