The original Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde video is the single most underrated AVGN video, and a proper pleb filter. This is what all the copycats never understood about the concept, which is that the idea of a man approaching his 30s, in his room late at night stewing away in bitter regret over a horrible video game from his childhood, is inherently funny in a relatable, yet tragic and absurd way. The atmosphere is just palpable, it's just *chef's kiss*. I often find myself ruminating over what a horrible game DK64 was, and what a waste of childhood it was to play it, and it genuinely bothers me when I see people defend it. I genuinely love James and think he's the only youtuber who doesn't have an annoying personality, or is a sellout, or has said or done anything that would make me hate his guts. He just seems like a good guy and a good family man which he prioritizes over making content. I like that he never fell into the trap of becoming a youtuber who gets caught in the grifting drama culture or feel like he need to speak his opinions about social or political movements. He just does exactly what he's always done and I respect that. He figured it out.

He started off as a funny reviewer making fun of woke content in modern films but now just feels like a parody of those grifter channels that hate everything and will exaggerate and be dishonest about elements of the thing he's talking about to make it seem worse than it actually is.

Soon after, the like other main guy behind the project left to do editing work for a big hollywood studio I think, and then Justin just stopped making videos.

There was a point where they were all sitting around discussing potential names for themselves like "Nostalgia Nerd" or "Angry Gamer Guy" or whatever and at one point, one of the Nerds suggests "Nostalgia Critic" and the main Nerd pauses and goes... "Now that's fucking stupid".
It was the funniest joke I've ever heard in the entire show's history and I gotta give him props for dropping a line like that in this modern run of the show

The gradual increase in anger, from bewilderment at the start to boiling rage at the end is comletely seamless. My favorite line in the video, asides from maybe the frothy sound of crackling ass, is after his final last angry rant he just exclaims "And I'm still playing! I don't know why. I guess I just can't resist being able to say I beat Little Red Hood." It's pretty much a modern day version of the myth of Sisyphus. It's subtle, it's comfy, it's quintessential. It's kino.
