I don't really think of Buffy being "dark" but I guess the stakes were quite high with Buffy getting killed at the end of the first season, etc. The final episode of season 1 is actually one of my favourites in the whole series with how intense it is compared to the earlier episodes (Cordelia and Willow find the AV Club members slaughtered by vampires, Buffy drowns in a shallow pool of water, etc.) I guess this show just has to be its own thing since there's no way they can recreate the "magic" of the original show, which was even shot on actual film.
