What went wrong?

It's a show that didn't need more than 1 season, and there was no real way to capture the magic again with the same formula. I think they should have taken a risk a done something different.

Gi-hun turned into an absolute non character for 3 episodes to the point where the season had no real main character. They realized that 4 episodes in so to make people care about him again they gave him le heckin baby to protect and he would do anything to keep it safe.

Gi-hun is basically a directionless character whose motivation changes all the time. The story barely even touches him, spreading too thin on the large number of characters, which happen to suck too, while he switches from from moralistic pacifist to gun-toting revolutionary to murderhobo to pacifist again, pretty much on a whim.
Way, way, WAY too much time wasted in those senseless voting scenes. When one of the VIPs said that the voting made things more exciting or something similar, I actually laughed out loud. The stupid writers really thought they had gold with that shit.
Most characters are fucking boring, and the ones that aren't (goth chick, based Thanos) all got killed early save for 100 and the cryptobro. I ended up hoping they would win in a crazy twist just for that reason. And the show wastes like half of its runtime if not more following the stories of the Best Korea soldier going rogue, the twink detective and his stupid sidekick - shit nobody gives a fuck about - or the old lady and the tranny. It's nonsensical.
And as the story unfolded, it turned out to be as predictable as it could get. Everyone guessed that the end was going to be about (actual spoilers) Gi-hun saving the preggo girl and/or the baby in a selfless sacrifice, that the games in SK were going to end but continue somewhere else. And that's what happened. Considering that this is the type of show that relies on ebin twists, the story turning out to be extremely predictable bores people.
There's probably more shitty things but I just finished it and it sucked, need to clear my thoughts a bit but that's the gist of it.

S1 was nice because it was made as a real series with the only intention of telling a story, as it should be, but now is another cashgrab, and a really bad one at that because there's not much else you can add to it, even SAW get the option of being creative along the way, this one already got old on S2.
