im going to watch this movie again and there is nothinng you can do about it
What's with that random shot of her flying in?
>>212084804Just stick to the avengers you retarded fuck.
shit i think i will too. have a cigarette. have two
>>212084842Relax
God forbid I try to discuss the movie
this film izza beautiful example of 15th century Venetian filmmaking
byoodiful essample
I don't get it, did he lose?
>>212084716 (OP)Good, please do so. I also expect you to watch it in the highest quality format possible.
>>212085186nah he won. he was about to go bro down with the devil.
>>212084878You're too fucking stupid for the movie.
>>212084716 (OP)Based. Good plot and locations. Shit directing from Polanksi though.
>>212084804watch the movie, shes an angel.
>>212085281>Shit directing from Polanksi though.Dont be made that he fucked your sister, bro.. :)
>>212085307You're the faggot who can't even follow the movie.
>>212084716 (OP)The way Frank Langella's character dies still makes me snicker just thinking about it
>ashes directly into the gutter of your priceless 13th century medieval grimoire
nothin' personnel, bibliophilo
>>212085699i bet that was depps idea
I need more mystery kino with suave amoral chainsmokers.
>>212085794>>212084716 (OP)If you like this movie, watch Ghost Writer. Same director, same vibe
>>212085552okay but for real I only watched it once maybe 2 years ago for the first time and it was a real rollercoaster and my takeaway ultimately was that she was in fact Satan somehow though I can't really justify that in my head but I just thought that would be the coolest outcome, that the cool chainsmoker noir guy on the case actually fucks hot female Satan and completes the ritual, is she actually Satan
>>212085699This pissed me right off, he does it a bunch of times. Maybe there's some narrative importance, signifying the lack of sanctity with which the materials are treated even by those who believe in it, nobody ever pulls him up on being a piece of shit and mishandling the books, maybe the books are immune to physical damage because of satan? I dunno but it fucking triggers my autism every time
>>212085960He doesn't give a fuck.
And how's a real satanic bible gonna be damaged by some smoke and ash? Weak ahh satan book fr
>>212086220Satan is grooming him to be his successor/prince/lover or whatever, he's the chosen one, Satan's top guy doesn't have agency
he even gets rode by Satan in hot girl form, he doesn't fuck her doggy style she rides him, more passivity
>>212086266>He doesn't give a fuck.I know he doesn't but literally everyone else surrounding those books were at the least fanatical collectors and at the most involved were practicing satan worshippers who as you say revered it like their version of the bible. Several people throughout the film casually brush off the fact that he's smoking and ashing his cigarette on the books, one time they literally physically brush his ash from the surface of the book.
>>212086220Another faggot who's too retarded for this movie
>>212086317sure, in hindsight you can pull that out of your ass. but as a movie protagonist its a missed opportunity. imagine if he used his conman skills to outwit people and move the plot along that way. i like the original Constantine from the comics but without the magic powers.
i like the movie btw
>>212086562lmao shut the fuck up cunt. i like the movie but at least i dont
>>212086583Fucking retard. End communication.
>>212084842That scene is literally Avengers tier shit though
>>212085960Depp never has any deep connection to the books he handles. He sells rare books he holds no personal love for the book itself. He is in it for the knowledge and the game (It's why he is worthy) and the other who chase it for power and vanity are not.
Also in the movie, the brothers get ash on the book. That didn't bother you?
Commentary anyone?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5-7w_achwE4
>>212086646How were they related in your mind?
>>2120857948mm
The jews hate it because it portrays them for who they are
>>212086764Yes it did bother me, I'm not talking about how depp didn't give a shit about the books and just looked at them as a money making object. The people he's surrounded by all throughout the film viewed them as much more than that and none of them seemed to give a shit he's actively damaging their million dollar edge bibles, especially when the brothers did it that pissed me off because they're explicitly supposed to care about books, that's like their whole thing is that they're into books.
Like I said maybe it's a hint that the books are indestructible or something, maybe it's implied that they were burned back when the author's other works got purged and when characters say these books "survived" they don't mean they were spirited away and hidden somewhere but are simply impervious to worldly damage. It has been a while since I watched it and I don't remember the exact backstory of the books and how they survived through the centuries to the time the film takes place but as a book autist watching it happen gave me the shits.
>>212086830Cheesy badly shot fight scenes
This film is about the relationship between the viewer and the filmmaker
--at the bottom level, you have the Frenchman who owns the book but isn't interested except for the beauty of the binding
--then you have the Baroness who has spent her life writing about the devil and never even considering the pictures, even though she had the best clue--she SAW him.
--at a higher level, you have Liana Tefler, who knows theres some power in the artifact but is still focused on the text (and incidentally sex)
--higher still you have Balkan who knows the text is worthless, and the pictures the real value but thinks the magic is in the pictures
--then you have the two brothers who have the power to tinker with the power of the pictures
--finally Corso who we see moving from the bottom of the list to this layer where he knows the power is not in the pictures themselves, but in the quest. (At the beginning, the value of the book to him is neither in its text, nor pictures, but in its binding and rarity.)
--then we have the girl who is the pictures
--and we have the viewer.
This is a cross, four people stacked, the two brothers and then three more people stacked
That's nine players, eight levels of consciousness created by the filmmaker, each layer tossing aside something. Who is the ninth player? You.
>>212087011Can you articulate how the scene in the ninth gate was cheesy or badly shot?
>>212087065interesting little write up. would be cool if the movie actually implemented this
>>212084716 (OP)Nothing like watching this movie while chain smoking in October
>>212087410He's literally explaining what's in the movie. Daft cunt.
>>212087549i get it man. its a cool idea. but its not in the movie
>>212087777checked, get confirms this is the correct opinion
>>212085281He's actually lost it in The Palace. The public lynching finally got to him when it spread to France
>>212087184Her levitation down the stairs looks awful and she comes from nowhere
She does a cheesy slow walk towards the attacker who is conveniently standing completely still and allows her to kick him, and again does a gay looking spin move while the attacker again, stands perfectly still for her
>>212087777Yeah you're right it's about smoking around old books.
>>212087993Well duh; The ash is Polanskis cum. And the rare satanic book is (You) the viewer.
Why was she helping him? was it because she was having fun getting boned by him?
>>212088034I accept that as your admission of defeat. Thanks for playing
>>212084804That ruined the movie for me. So silly.
>>212087410God is to humanity what authors are to characters and viewers. The movie to us is the same as the book is to them. A lot of artists are aware of this, Christopher Nolan makes is intentional and is obvious about it while Roman Polanski uses concealment. Fitting for a film about occultism.
>>212086317Actually Corso is meant to be Satan/Lucifer in the film. The story is about Luciferโs redemption, ascendence from earth and reentry into heaven. The girl is the whore of Babylon, another fallen angel that watches over Lucifer and aids him on his quest. Corso doesnโt realize any of this, but throughout the movie there are allusions such as when Balkan is performing his ritual to summon Lucifer but Corso appears instead, etc.
>>212088543Literally all of Polanski's movies are about evil winning
>>212085852>If you like this movie, watch Ghost Writer. Same director, same vibeI put off watching this movie for years, despite Ninth Gate being one of my absolute favorite movies. The synopsis just makes it sound so boring and generic. Do yourself a favor if you're on the fence like I was. Watch it. Fantastic movie.
>>212088732I really feel like Ghost Writer's atmosphere and tone would be better suited to Ninth Gate than what Ninth Gate's tone and atmosphere actually is
>>212086764>He is in it for the knowledge and the game (It's why he is worthy) and the other who chase it for power and vanity are not... he's literally me....
>>212088732Tonight is the night. It was supposed to be last week but it wasn't.
>>212088835Let it go before you give yourself a heart attack.
>>212088732gonna check it out, are there any other similar notable movies? I could have sworn I saw a list posted here once but I lost the tab in the sea of 800 tabs I had open most likely
Polanski didn't give a FUCK.
>>212089515damn he was genuinely terrified
>>212089515>The Ninth Gate>The Ghost Writer>FranticWtf? How the FUCK does some little anal rapist make every current Hollywood director look like clueless mental midgets??
>>212089714You have to spend all day every day of your entire life thinking about how to get away with insane, complex crimes.
>>212089714His actions outside of directing movies are irrelevant to his skill as a director.
>>212089515>>212089714the power of you know what
>>212084716 (OP)say what you want about Boris, he was kinda based and let depp watch what he assumed was the right ritual
>>212088795I adore bothe movies, but I'm not sure if I agree. Ninth Gate's atmosphere and tone are probably my favorite aspects of it. I might just be conflating my love for the score with the atmosphere and tone though, so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt.
Depp also looks absolutely amazing with a tidy haircut and a few grey hairs. It's such a shame he's doing weird stuff with hats and leather bracelets, he could've been so handsome and dignified as he aged.
>>212084804>randomPeople like you fill the world and no one ever really thinks about you. I hope you are well and I hope you had a nice supper w your family.
>>212089714>>212089845Being a willing participant to an MK Ultra opp (Manson murders) opened a lot of doors plus he was, and is legitimately very talented.
>>212085852Yeah I've seen that. It's great.
>>212085874Why not?
>>212086220Yeah I get what you're saying but seeing him trying to fight against all these powerful forces as it becomes increasingly clear that they're supernatural is very exciting. Him being an active agent would remove that tension.
>>212086881Thanks I'll check it out.
>>212090239Yeah but that's not what I meant or what they most likely meant and most people are saying she wasn't Satan anyway.
>>212090246The character isn't remotely charming
>>212090585Why so you care how he dresses in read life? You're a faggot. You made that Aaron Paul thread didn't you?
>>212091010Probably because you're a homo.
>>212089515Are you aware this is like his trademark thing?
>In the movie Rosemary's Baby, there's a memorable scene where Rosemary, played by Mia Farrow, walks into real, moving traffic. Director Roman Polanski had Farrow walk into the street, telling her "nobody will hit a pregnant woman"And i notice in every movie of his someone is walking into the road so maybe he does this every fuckin time?
any more kinos with sexy demon ladies?
Iโm pretty sure that 1 autist spammed threads about this movie so much he somehow convinced the entire board to love this utterly mediocre movie that doesnโt even crack the top 10 of Polanskiโs filmography
>>212091530You don't think The Ninth Gate is one of his 10 best? I mean at least give us your top 10 if you're gonna actually say this and not just be trolling
>>212091530I watched this movie on vhs. I didn't need some faggot zoomer to tell me to watch it.
She is not Satan. After all the discussion this movie has had on /tv/ and people are still retarded.
>>212090982>>212091010>>212091073Johnny Depp is relentlessly charming.
>>212085960The movie is partly an homage to the private detective genre, so that doesn't bother me any more than it bothers me that he goes through the classic trope of getting hit on the head and then losing consciousness for a length of time that is convenient for the plot, and then is fine, even though that's not how getting hit on the head actually necessarily works. That it's an occult movie makes it even easier for me to suspend my disbelief about these things. After all, these are occult books and this is a very strange man.
>>2120916341. Rosemaryโs Baby
2. Chinatown
3. Tess
4. Repulsion
5. Macbeth
6. The Pianist
7. The Tenant
8. Knife in the Water
9. The Ghost Writer
10. Bitter Moon
This guy is a kino machine but this board only discusses one of his most rushed and half-hearted movies that he admitted he didnโt take seriously
>>212091888For me personally? I'm thinking she's Satan.
>>212091923He's a skilled enough actor that he can portray a character who isn't charming, this was one of those characters.
>>212091944I like it more than Chinatown, rushed or not. Chinatown is really good but for some reason it doesn't stand out for me compared to other noirs/neo-noirs as much as it does for other people. I'm one of those rare people who enjoys The Two Jakes as much as Chinatown. On the other hand, for some reason The Ninth Gate has been stuck in my head ever since I watched it many years ago.
The ninth gate is my 9th most favorite movie
>>212091992Seriously why? The movie strongly suggests she is the whore of Babylon, like the other anon said. The movie even shows her resembling the engraving in the Ninth Gate. The engraving shows her ridding a multi headed beast (satan as seen in revelations). At the end of the film she rides Corso (actually Satan). Thatโs it.
>>212091938>classic trope of getting hit on the head and then losing consciousness for a length of timeYeah once you find out that lapsing out of consciousness for greater than like 2 minutes is pretty much guaranteed severe brain damage, a lot of movies break that suspension of disbelief huh.
>>212091027Yeah I'm literally a faggot and he could've been such a sexy silver fox older man type and instead he looks like a dehydrated cowboy was fired out of a cannon through a thrift shop.
>>212085699>13th century medieval grimoireits probably vellum and not paper , don't worry its tough
>>212090640I'm the one that said it, and it was what I meant. You see anon, I was telling him the truth without spoiling it. As we both know its hinted somewhere in the middle of the movie that she is a guardian angel sent to guide his mission (to mislead the audience of course), and because Satan is in fact an angel my response to anon was both misleading AND truthful! Hahaha! Do you see now?!
>>212092030It has merit. Polanski shouldโve just taken it seriously and made it a real thriller. By the time his wife randomly flies in the air and Balkan crashes the cult ceremony you can tell the movie is just giving up on itself.
>>212085699the ashes activate the sin energy
>>212092287Thankfully depp isn't supporting your faggotry
>>212092470He doesn't need to. Being himself hinders you enough. He's doing his part.
>>212092195>At the end of the film she rides Corso (actually Satan). The notion of setting up an elaborate puzzle for oneself, with a character into which to insert and devoid of one's true memories with which to work it out, is intredasting.

>>212088279It's hinted multiple times she has magical powers up until that point but could easily be explained away as something mundane.
The scene was awesome because it finally exposes that she isn't human which is a niggling feeling for anyone with an average IQ on their first watch
Imagine being such a dumbfuck to not understand that.

>>212085552She was a witness to the war on heaven but not satan, she might not even be a devil but a fallen angel.
In the movie sheโs most likely a real agent, but in the story itโs possiable sheโs stuck here and wondering the earth trying to get back to hell herself

I watch this movie all of the time. It's my ultimate comfort film.
I used to check out a lot of books from the library, and I always hated it when they'd been checked out by a smoker before and still stank. One time I had a book that had previously spent 6 months with a cigar smoker and I couldn't read it. It stank so much!
