I think the puff for him recently comes from people being really desperate for this thing to be good. Gunn is alright. He doesn’t have any high highs nor any low lows. He’s a “safe” director that plays very close to his formula. But he wouldn’t be in anybody’s top 3 capeshits, maybe top 5. If you’re not impressed with the movie by now that probably won’t change in the theater. The fact that this thing is still a coin flip for a lot of people goes to show it’s doomed on some level. Contrary to MoS where you knew from its great trailers it would deliver something. Superman will certainly find some success but that will be short lived once people realize the DCU is just the MCU. It’s not like Gunn can flip a switch and do serious good looking stuff. Self ironic comedy is all he knows, just as Snyder is a slave his own style. That being said I still think Snyder was more appropriate for DC which revels in a “dark” and more serious flavor. We grew accustomed to stuff like Justice League Unlimited which is a political drama laced with diverse characters and occasional lighthearted sincere humor.

Aquaman didn't have a track record of previous iterations. Although, its still a great comparison. The first one made 1.1billion and came out in 2018 (capeshit was at a high), then then second one that came out in 2023 only made 440million (post pandemic theaters in life support, capeshit fatigue). So, I think that's definitely important to note. DC properties are at an all time low, Gunn has churned out nothing but shit with his generic band of misfits formula (with dirty jokes and boomer music) that he uses in all his recent capeshit content. It'll be profitable but it won't meet WB's expectations which will further kill Gunn's influence, is my prediction.

Also, furthermore on my previous posts. The only movies after Endgame (2019) to actually break a billion have been No Way Home, obviously because of the three Spider-Men, and Deadpool 3, because of the culmination of the Foxverse and Wolverine finally teaming up with Deadpool. Superman doesn't really have nothing going for it, and they already blew their Batman and Justice League team-ups almost a decade earlier. The thing is, I don't think the movie will failed critically or financially but Gunn will have to do miracles to keep WB from throwing him out the ship and then jumping with him to their deaths when it doesnt meet their ridiculous expectations. They are impatient and aren't willing to let the universe grow.
