If the show isn't over, it's really not a big deal if they get their phones back. S1 had intrigue with the fish not knowing what's going on because it was the first season so for all they know the show really could've blown up. Letting them get their phones was a mistake in this case.

S2 lost that intrigue when we realized they were fans so they already had an idea of the show's popularity and the gaslighting bits, which is part of the reason S2 wasn't good.

S3 brought back that element by getting a bunch of people who didn't know what the show was at all. That's why Famous House was peak fishtank.

This season they got a bunch of fans who know this isn't really a big show. There's barely any gaslighting going on at all. Them getting their phones won't change anything.
