They are adapting a Tom King story, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which is a mixed sign.
On one hand, that comic reviewed really well, people liked it, on the other it isn't the type of Supergirl most people would really like or be familiar with.

SG:WoT is a dark take on the Supergirl character, really examining her grief and anger and all that.

There was an effort before that where Grant Morrison, Mark Waid, Mark Millar, and some other tried to bring it all back, and not only that, tried to reboot Superman because according to them Superman couldn't just divorce Lois without coming off looking bad. They were pretty much proposing Spider-Man's Brand New Day decades before.

DC editorial stopped them. Morrison eventually got his wish with the New 52 but ironically ended up hating the status quo himself. KEK.

It got kind of convoluted and DC agreed with you and got rid of all other Kryptonians in Crisis and basically made Supergirl she who must not be named for a while(Waid almost got fired for just referencing her in one of his comics).

Then eventually they got over that and brought her, and Krypto and Zod back etc. Superman is still the "last son of Krypton" as in he's the last boy to be born on Krypton, but he's not the last Kryptonian.

On one hand you have comic fans wanting classic silver age status quo and on the other hand you have comic fans complaining nothing meaningful can ever happen and all the stories are pointless because everything will be reset. Kents dying would be a real drama someone like superman would have to deal with for example, and complaining about that is how you get weird marvel limbo timeline where no one ages and time progresses like 1/10th the speed of the real world but only when its convenient.
