I went thru the full list of DCEU movies and it’s actually a little mystifying that these are real movies. Hardly any of them made any money at all, all were reviled by critics and audiences, and frankly I didn’t even know half of this shot had come out. There was a Blue Beetle movie? It’s honestly fucking pathetic why do they bother.

Man of Steel is the best sci-fi movie ever made.
Unfortunately it happens to be capeshit and the genre is plagued by subhumans.

nah not all of them. the DCEU was probably the most inconsistent franchise I can think of. WW, Shazam, the second Suicide Squad were loved by critics. WW was the only female lead capeshit at the time when even the MCU was afraid to do it.

the latter half is basically just WB dumping the movies they already had and not trying to market them since they knew they were rebooting anyway. Blue Beetle was actually decently reviewed strangely enough though nobody saw it.

That is why Snyderverse was such a joke. When MoS came out and divided, they want to do better so that MoS will be their weakest and it's only getting better. Then turns out MoS ended up being its best because the rest is such a joke.

It's honestly a very ugly and kind of boring movie. Felt like it was aping Nolan's style from TDK trilogy but worse in every way. Dialogue is straight up awful at points. The fight in Smallville is cool though. Never seen super speed/strength portrayed like that. Fight in Metropolis is a mess however.

They wanted to continue the nolanverse hyper realistic universe. They thought people wanted a dark gritty superman movie. They tried with man of steel, it made money but bewildered audiences who thought "what good is dark gritty superman". It wasn't really that dark and gritty, it was kind of "don't save me alien child, someone might be watching this tornado" retarded with a superman who doesn't really save people. Then they followed it up with a stupid batman vs superman movie with a really good batman and a really stupid plot. And then the dceu was braindead.

The comics were literally a MAX style run, almost like a Dark Knight Frank Miller iteration. After the horribly dull Superman Returns, and the success of Batman Begins that was based on the comics, Warner bought in Nolan who brought in Goyer and Snyder.

a lot of the dialogue was awful, the movie itself was just oddly paced. it's so slow for a lot of it and then the last act is nothing but overwhelming action like a roland emmerich movie and Superman himself is pretty dull and there never really feels like a good reason to care about him as a person. His dad was fine even if his death felt a bit contrived, but I'll grant you Costner is probably the best actor in the movie and the first parts with him are a lot more engaging than everything after.

The dialogue wasn't fine though a lot of it was characters turning to the camera to give some lofty monologue to try to spell out the theme of the movie. The most egregious part is when Superman stops fighting Zod just to explain that he's experiencing sensory overload that he personally overcame with the help of his parents, as if the audience is too stupid to remember the first act of the movie and couldn't get it on their own. Then you have random corny shit like
>YOU'RE A MONSTER ZOD.. AND I'M GOING TO STOP YOU.
which is as bad as the same line from TDKR, which is why I say it feels like a temu Nolan movie. Then you just have lame attempts at humor that aren't funny, like Lois saying "well here it looks like an S.. what about S--," or the military girl saying how hot she thinks Superman is at the end. In a vacuum I don't think these things are a deathknell, like if some of this shit was in the Raimi Spider-Man movies it would work since how corny their tone in but it doesn't mesh well with the grounded documentary style they tried to do for the movie. And then it has that classic Nolan issue where 90% of the dialogue otherwise is just exposition, very rarely if ever do characters have a conversation to talk like normal people which is probably why Superman barely feels like a character in this movie. He talks to his dad about his purpose, he talks to his other dad about his purpose again, he talks to the military about his purpose, he talks to Lois about his purpose that's like all his conversations.

what? I assume you're referring to the Zod scene. It's dumb because it's clearly exposition dialogue to explain why Zod is suddenly freaking out. But we already knew why Zod was freaking out because that was clearly laid out in the first arc of the movie, we didn't need Superman to suddenly stop the fight for no reason and turn to the camera and explain it and it's nonsensical for him to do so on top of that. A very similar scene occurs in the first Iron Man when the Jeff Bridge's's armor starts freezing up and we know exactly why it happens because we saw Iron Man deal with the same issue, so it's just a simple
>How'd you deal with the ice problem?
>What ice problem
>he freezes
>That one

if this scene was written like Man of Steel it would go something like

>It's getting pretty cold up here isn't it? You're freezing at sub zero atmospheric temperature. I learned how to bypass it by engineering a solution, enabling me to keep flying without freezing up. Without my improvements, you have no defense against it. And you can't move, can you?

Normal people can and do go on for a spell. Beautifully however, and something you obviously missed, was KAL saying, It Took YEARS to adapt to the atmosphere!!!!
At the end of the movie, that Brilliant set up culminated Beautifully, and to demonstrate just how absolutely broken Zod is, Zod after paraphrasing his etymology then said, Where did you train, ON A FARM???

And then he demonstrated flight!!! Showing the audience and KAL of how deadly this guy was!!! So KAL's earlier colloquy paid off in spades.

KAL needed years and Zod, a few hours.

It's intentional shot like one, Snyder has even said as much, this is why there's the color is so desaturated, there's so many close ups on faces and why there's so much shaky cam because everything is shot handheld.

it's one example I gave out of like 3 and the general issue of so much of the movie being exposition. It's just the more glaring one because on top of it being exposition that was already clearly laid out, it ruins an otherwise clever moment in the fight.

Man of Steel is like a parody of a Nolan Batman film. Nolan returned as an Executive Producer, Hans Zimmer returned to do the music and David S Goyer wrote the script. But unlike Nolan it kind of misses the point?

Nolan is a rather mainstream visual directory whose true strength is making normies feel clever. A lot of normal people want to feel more intelligent, the advent of Youtubers analysing media is part of this desire. The Dark Knight became the key example of mainstream faux intellectual discussion around the motives of the Joker and many of those lines struck a chord with audiences (you either die a hero or live long enough to become the villain). But the motivation of the Joker was quite plainly expressed in exposition scenes like with Harvey Dent.

The problem with Man of Steel is, all its themes and perspectives are weirdly shallow as the film masturbates with the visual spectacle. And when people claim that the film did have deep intellectual points, many of these in the film are completely messy, particularly around Pa Kent and Superman's backstory. The film has something to say but didn't express it well. Nolan would have spelt it out, Snyder didn't spell it out but that doesn't mean it was intellectually deep or subtle, because he was confused about what he actually had to say.

And part of the problem I think, in particular after seeing the multiple director's cuts of Snyder's work, is the guy is like the person who posts huge comments explaining something on 4chan (like this post). The guy butchers stuff in the cut because he films too much and doesn't often understand the shorthand he needs to do in film language.

But because it was a parody of Nolan's style, we are forever stuck with idiots constantly claiming the film was more deep than it actually was, rather than a mainstream parody of a successful film making in a superhero cinematic universe.

David S Goyer once heard Wesley Snipes say, "Some motherfuckers are always trying to ice-skate uphill," during a meeting. He thought the line was so bad ass that it became the big one liner at the end of Blade.

David S Goyer is weirdly simple and dumb when you read his scripting. He isn't being complex, he is simply failing at expressing some rather simple stuff because he gets weird ideas in his head.

Some of the dumbest stuff in the Nolan films is absolutely Goyer but Nolan changes enough of it to improve it.

The DCEU's second half is the most inexplicable period of mismanagement any major media company has ever had. They attempted to cash in on every IP they had....except Batman and Superman. Harley Quinn got more solo films than Affleck's Batman did. They put Cavill's Superman in the doghouse but greenlit a Suicide Squad reboot after one film. They dragged their heels on the Aquaman sequel but didn't hesitate to make Shazam 2.

They eventually did make a Batman movie....and it had nothing to do with their extended universe that desperately needed a hit and instead was essentially a competing product because Affleck was also still Batman. And now they don't know what to do with it because it doesn't fit with their new plan either. The biggest success of their entire tenure was Joker and that was a film they had so little confidence in they gave away some of the profits because they didn't think there would be any. Even their successes were partial failures. They literally did everything wrong every step of the way. It's like Snyder was the only sane person at any level of the executive branch.

The mismanagement happened because even the early DCEU didn't make much huge amounts of money (behind the scenes cost of setting up the franchise are not taken into account with individual film budgets) and their expectations were comparing it to Marvel and being behind the MCU which had just had an Avengers' movie break a billion. Mixed reactions from audiences and critics didn't help and they constantly went into panic mode. And post Justice League they were already in reboot mode when Aquaman made big bucks, confusing the process. Then they tried to course correct with Black Adam and the Flash. It was mismanaged from the get go because they expected MCU money/acclaim, felt behind, didn't have a plan and structure.

I mean fuck: post Man of Steel, WB were begging Christopher Nolan to be their Kevin Feige and even talked Christopher Bale about reprising the role of Batman in BvS and retroactively making the Nolan films the start of the DCEU.

>The DCEU was off to such a good start wtf happened. They literally didn’t even make a movie half this good after it

Studio Interference was the main problem. MCU was getting too much traction too fast, and WB felt they had to move just as fast to compete.

They were hoping 'Man of Steel' would be a tie-in to Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy; which is why Nolan was the EP. But Bale refused to return. So they started the entire DCU from 'scratch'....still turned out to be a great film.

Then BvS came out and was butchered to shit, because WB wanted to quickly push for a Justice League movie, instead of letting the characters slowly be introduced, as it happened with The Avengers. While also pushing for the "Death of Superman" storyline, that didn't make much sense to begin with. "Zombie-Zod Doomsday" was a cheap way to do it.

Then Snyder's daughter died and threw off production of Justice League, that got Joss Whedon to finish the project, but was such a tonal mess, people couldn't tell where the dark edgy Snyder-ism started and Whedon's comical aloofness began....

Then there was Wonder Woman, and the hard injection of female politics.

Then there was alcoholic Ben Affleck being an alcoholic.

Then there was whoever that black guy who played Cyborg was, being some BLM poster boy by calling out Whedon for being a director of his movie.

Then there was Ezra Miller...... tranny-freak who likes to choke women, and start cults, and other stuff....

There’s a lot of historical revisionism happening nowadays. BvS didn’t hit as well as it should have but people were still definitely excited for the future of the DCEU. https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/4bupv2/official_discussion_batman_v_superman_dawn_of/

The real collapse came with Justice League. If Snyder did his plan they would’ve just fine. It wouldn’t have made a 3 billion dollar block buster like Endgame but it would’ve been profitable and WB could’ve moved on as soon as 2020/2021. I fundamentally disagree with Snyder’s plans post JL but that’s a different discussion.

No, it wasn´t. Too grounded, comic book adaptations should never be grounded. They need to embrace the essence of their source material. Stuff like Dick Tracy, Sin City or Burton´s Batman is were it´s at.
