Korda is plotting a scheme to overhaul Phoenicia's transport, trade, and power infrastructure and has several wealthy men invested in the scheme. In an effort to disrupt Korda's business empire, governments conspire to drive up the price of base materials, leaving a substantial shortfall which exceeds the entirety of Korda's fortune. Korda has to convince each of his partners to cover part of the shortfall and attempts to do so with the aid of his estranged daughter, who he is inspired to contact after his near-death experience. Korda succeeds in convincing his investors to cover half of the shortfall, and meets with his half-brother, Nubar, to persuade him to cover the remainder. Nubar not only refuses, but withdraws his entire investment and reveals that he was behind the various attempts to assassinate Korda. Nubar kills himself in an attempt to kill Korda, but fails. Korda puts up the entirety of his estate to cover the remaining shortfall and fund the project in an ethical way that will greatly benefit the people of the region and retires with his daughter to a simpler life.
