I like III because it rejects Lost World's cynicism. Just a bunch of people trying to rescue a kid and go home, Grant deals with his fear of dinosaurs, Billy does the right thing in the end despite being an ass, the divorced couple gets back together, the kid disses Malcolm, and the overall message is that nature and dinosaurs are fucking awesome.

I don't understand how anyone can like the movie about locusts, simp Alan Grant and a Mary Sue that gives birth to herself.

The original is terrific, the only movie in the series I would actually say is a good movie. But god damn if the first 75% of Lost World isn't my fucking jam. If it just ended when the Malcolm and co got on the helicopter and cut all the little T-rex in the big city bullshit it would be my fave, hands down. III has a handful of decent scenes, mostly on the boat. I've had the same journey with World that i did The Force Awakens; saw it on release, thought it was fine. Derivative but mostly unoffensive, popcorn type flick. But after rewatching them years later the patina has rubbed off, theyre soulless cash grabs and I only enjoyed them because theyre aping (much better) works that I already loved. Fallen Kingdom and Dominion are both. At least fallen kingdom can be shown to film school students as a cautionary tale (hey, do you have a subpar idea for a movie, but its only gonna take up about 60 minutes of screen time? Just slap an entirely different, wholly unconnected, and yet somehow worse 2nd movie on the end of it.) Dominion is just... boring. Fucking prehistoric locusts? I mean, i guess the respect to the deep cut nod to the Super Nintendo Jurassic Park and its inexplicable giant killer fly enemies...

I wonder how much of that has to do with it being the first movie not (kinda, its complicated) directly based on a book is. Cuz, if you've read either JP book or just Crichton in general he really just loves to naval gaze for pages and pages, fucking Malcolm just wanking about chaos theory for like 30% of the first book. Quite a bit more violent. There are more characters in the first book, and thus more die. Henry Wu in the book gets eviscerated by raptors the way Grant describes to the kid in the beginning of the movie. In the second book the raptors rip a guy's head off and kick it around like a cat playing with a toy while rolling around in his blood.

The thing that's frustrating about Fallen Kingdom is that they could have easily made an entire movie out of just the premise of rescuing dinosaurs on the island before the volcano explodes and the sort of challenges that would provide along the way.
Nobody really remembers this now, but in JW there was an entire section of the island that was a complete wild zone that took up a third of the island, probably where a lot of the original park's remains were (and dinosaurs). I think maybe if JW hadn't blown its load with all the JP nostalgia, you could have easily milked in for the sequel, but you still could have done a lot in that area.
But no, we just had to have a wannabe Resident Evil with dinosaurs movie that wasn't even Dino Crisis.

Right, and if they they had gone whole hog on the "rescue the dinosaurs before the island blows" plot I would have almost certainly enjoyed the film a whole lot more. Its kinda funny, you can almost see why they didn't do it (cuz then its just a straight up retread of TLW), but by switching to an entirely different plot, location, and genre for the last act... they literally did remake TLW lol.

The Lost World had some promising ideas like seeing the trees moving beneath the high-hide and the two rexes double-teaming the trailer. And Peter Postelwaite as a safari hunter was kino. The second half in San Francisco felt so slapstick though.

Speaking of great scenes, theres one from TLW book that never made it into any movies that ive been disappointed we didnt get to see, where the protagonists are hidden watching the raptors hunt (prolly in the high-hide) and they realize that the raptors are all like feral because theyre intelligent enough that older raptors are supposed to teach them not to like, kill literally everything even if they cant possibly eat it all and not to immediately cannibalize each other when they get injured.

I don't agree because it's not true. In no narrative manner does it negatively affect hi character on the same level as Luke or Indy. What does he lose? He's still top in his field and revered and still maintains a great friendship with Ellie despite them not being together. He's not ruined or devastated by it at all, because their relationship was never a narrative factor to his success. The fact that they aren't together because it's implied that his first love is paleontology is completely in character for someone like him.

I like all three of the originals. They are all good in their own way. I watched the first "World" and turned it off halfway through because it sucked major ass. I cannot believe that there are people who have stuck it out all this way.
