For a while in the 90s-2000s things did appear a bit less turbulent than the previous decades outside of Rodney King and OJ. It seems like there was just not many major incidents that stoked racial tensions. The Trayvon Martin incident seemed like the turning point that helped lead to where we are now.
Radical progressives and political correctness gone mad is nothing new either. The hippie movement was full of that BS and permanently influenced mainstream society and culture.
Now it just seems like the average people who would just ignore political bullshit are forced to take in the talking points of the more radical left/right, and based on their beliefs on a topic they get funnelled into the tribalistic hivemind each side has. It seems like the work of the media and the direct efforts of radical groups across the political spectrum to influence the masses, spread their propaganda, fight the culture war etc.
