Herzog (A-Tier)

There was a somewhat interesting thread about Von Trier's Dogville earlier today. People were discussing Bertolt Brecht's influence, the Threepenny Opera, and other allusions/symbolism contained within the script.
It, of course, got quickly deleted and replaced with 14 threads dedicated to Star Wars (Andorβ’ now available on Disney+β’). Such is life!

As far ad horror movies from this century go it's good, as far as John Carpenter films go it's just ok. He's such a great formalist though, it looks do much better framed and staged than every other mainstream american/horror movie from 2010.

what this does is extract the clips and then crop, doing both at the same time never worked for me idk, takes a bit more time because of that, you want to adjust these:
crop_width = 1420
crop_height = 1080
crop_x = ((1920 - crop_width)/2)
crop_y = 0
if the black bars are horizontal, then crop_y = ((1080 - crop_height)/2)
im sure there's a way to combine both scripts and maybe even use ffmpeg's cropdetect but it werks

The second sketch was really funny. It's so weird to see these light lovely comedies from the USSR when what you're used to from them is dire bleak faux-poetic existential horseshit like what is popular as "soviet cinema" in the west. It's almost as if they only wanted us to think of the USSR as nothing but suffering and soviet people as nothing but miserable, really makes you think.

Gaidai is great, although this isn't his best, that would be The Golden Arm, and that has a lot of satire on the Soviet way of life. In fact the soviets told him to cut out a bunch of scenes out of the film so he put footage of a nuclear explosion right at the end of the movie and said he is willing to remove any scene but that. The authorities allowed him to leave the movie as it was in the exchange for removing the nuclear explosion.

>There was a somewhat interesting thread about Von Trier's Dogville earlier today. People were discussing Bertolt Brecht's influence, the Threepenny Opera, and other allusions/symbolism contained within the script.
That was me actually. I like Von Trier. Iβd say Von trierβs main influences are the Bible (obvious Christian symbolism), Bertolt Brecht (Marxist class analysis plus epic theater) and Carl theodor Dreyer. Dreyer was of course from Trierβs native Denmark and his style was minimalist- empty rooms with bright lights similar to what we see in areas of Dogville.
Here is an awesome video from Von trier himself on Dreyerβs influence in Dogville

Same thing can be said about films. It's either that, or they're not compelling enough.

Highly personal opinion. There's replay value in a game like Deus Ex.

There is a frictional cost to trying to glean whatever artistic experience there is in say, Silent Hill 2, since the technique of making survival horror has been improved iteratively 100 times since then and you're now accustomed to that. Meanwhile there is no real QoL difference between Lawrence of Arabia and Dune, two films 60 years apart. Technique was perfected relatively early in film's history. It's easier to watch an old film than to play an old game.

>The filmsβ screenwriters, Preston Sturges and Billy Wilder, dismissed Leisenβs skills. Sturges thought of Leisen as an βinterior decorator.β Wilder, who wrote Midnight with writing partner Charles Brackett, said the following: ββ¦ he fucked up the script and our scripts were damn near perfection, let me tell you. Leisen was too goddamn fey. I donβt knock fairies. Let him be a fairy. Leisenβs problem was that he was a stupid fairy.β Motivated to control their work, both began their own directorial careers soon after their collaborations with Leisen ended.
Based Leisen making those two retards seethe. Midnight is better than anything Wilder ever did btw, so the "fairy" was right.

That's true, based on stories I've read. They also said that it was mostly creepy gay oldfags that went there to get some action, and that ocasionally some whores and "liberal" women would come in too, but only like 5% of the time. Back then, there was one of those theaters close to where I lived, and people have said that attenders even did orgies in the bathrooms.

Interesting list. TCM is one of the only three horrors that I rated 4/5, along with Cat People and I Walked with a Zombie (which are variations of the same film). I've never seen Cannibal Holocaust, but now I'm intrigued. The Exorcist I saw 20 years ago so my impression is rusty, but most likely it's a 2.5/5 for me, same for Elm Street.

These sll appear to be genuine liquor bottles, at least judging by the fact that some are genuine, and making some fake labels, while using other genuine ones would not make sense.
Chivas or Chivas Regal is the Scotch bottle on the left.
I think the next bottle from the left is Old Overholt Whiskey.
The green labeled bottle is Cavanagh Whiskey.
The bottle on the right is Golden Eagle Dry Gin.
The bottle second from the right is an older Smirnoff bottle.
Some of the bottles are older designs, and other brands seem to not be common.

the ones with asterisks I wasn't sure about including at first, but I didn't know where else to place them with how I have the rest of Europe split up, and I feel they fit here. also, I was originally planning to have the Czechoslovakian and USSR flags on the films where applicable, as well as the flag of the country that the director is actually from, but I'm now thinking I'll just use the director's nationality because the other way seems like too much work. thoughts?

The only real issue that I have with anime is that it's animated. Thing is, though, there's so much variety out there compared to live-action stuff that If I wanted to watch a halfway decent horror movie about mechs, let's say, I think the closet thing I'd get would be something like Terminator.

another question, where should someone like Larisa Shepitko go? she's Ukrainian, but she never made a Ukrainian film (film either taking place in Ukraine or where they speak Ukrainian) from what I can tell. should she still be counted as a Ukrainian director, or Russian? there are a bunch of directors in this situation, and I don't know what to do with them. I'm leaning towards still counting them as Armenian, Georgian, Ukrainian, etc., but I'd be willing to change it if that's what people think

It's not even remotely close to The Thing. The Thing is a phenomenal work of suspense and imagination, Halloween is just some dumb high school girls being goofy and then a girl who is able to fend off a killer in the most predictable fashion that makes the final 30 minutes of the movie a chore, and the entire suburban cult thing was literally developed more in The Ward even though it looks like every low-tier horror movie of the 2010s, but it is an interesting story.
Literally everything from The Ward to Wild Things to It Follows (bad) has already done the same thing as Halloween while being less of a slog.
