There was a somewhat interesting thread about Von Trier's Dogville earlier today. People were discussing Bertolt Brecht's influence, the Threepenny Opera, and other allusions/symbolism contained within the script.
It, of course, got quickly deleted and replaced with 14 threads dedicated to Star Wars (Andorโข now available on Disney+โข). Such is life!
>>212183910>Art-Ho-TierI don't know how to tell you this, but Fassbinder is very arthoecore. Especially Petra Von Kant.

>>212190782https://pastebin.com/CGxs8939
what this does is extract the clips and then crop, doing both at the same time never worked for me idk, takes a bit more time because of that, you want to adjust these:
crop_width = 1420
crop_height = 1080
crop_x = ((1920 - crop_width)/2)
crop_y = 0
if the black bars are horizontal, then crop_y = ((1080 - crop_height)/2)
im sure there's a way to combine both scripts and maybe even use ffmpeg's cropdetect but it werks

People were discussing Bertolt Brecht's influence, the Threepenny Opera, and other allusions/symbolism contained within the script. That was me actually. I like Von Trier. Iโd say Von trierโs main influences are the Bible (obvious Christian symbolism), Bertolt Brecht (Marxist class analysis plus epic theater) and Carl theodor Dreyer. Dreyer was of course from Trierโs native Denmark and his style was minimalist- empty rooms with bright lights similar to what we see in areas of Dogville.

>>212202631There is a frictional cost to trying to glean whatever artistic experience there is in say, Silent Hill 2, since the technique of making survival horror has been improved iteratively 100 times since then and you're now accustomed to that. Meanwhile there is no real QoL difference between Lawrence of Arabia and Dune, two films 60 years apart. Technique was perfected relatively early in film's history. It's easier to watch an old film than to play an old game.

Leisen was too goddamn fey. I donโt knock fairies. Let him be a fairy. Leisenโs problem was that he was a stupid fairy.โ Motivated to control their work, both began their own directorial careers soon after their collaborations with Leisen ended.

>>212228982Jeanne Dielman
>>212228982yes, but most of /film/ is insecure about it
>>212230183looks like a still from the sound of the summer's music video get lucky
>>212230183I love American Graffiti
>>212229494The only real issue that I have with anime is that it's animated. Thing is, though, there's so much variety out there compared to live-action stuff that If I wanted to watch a halfway decent horror movie about mechs, let's say, I think the closet thing I'd get would be something like Terminator.
>>212227782>A Short Film About LoveThe ending was awful.
>>212230665Terminator isn't horror or mecha.
>>212227287Dovzhenko, Paradjanov, Iosselani, Tarkovsky, Vlacil, Jancso, Jakubisko, Zeman, Vavra, Menzel, Lipsky, Svankmajer, the list goes on...
>>212230931Melbourne kid like you knowing all this about my homeland?
>>212227287another question, where should someone like Larisa Shepitko go? she's Ukrainian, but she never made a Ukrainian film (film either taking place in Ukraine or where they speak Ukrainian) from what I can tell. should she still be counted as a Ukrainian director, or Russian? there are a bunch of directors in this situation, and I don't know what to do with them. I'm leaning towards still counting them as Armenian, Georgian, Ukrainian, etc., but I'd be willing to change it if that's what people think
>>212231435actually, I've now changed my mind. if they are a USSR director who never made a film in their native country or language, they are going under Russia
RIP Florence Delay
she starred in Robert Bresson's The Trial of Joan of Arc as the titular character

>>212227287>PolandSkolimowski, the film, Walkover. That's all.
>>212232009F. She was cute.
>>212227287I think there should be separate charts here, one just for member of the USSR, which would be a big enough chart, and then Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, East Germany on a Central Europe chart. The way you've set up here is gonna be way yoo big.
>>212225489Noticed that when he said Deadpool and Wolverine was "good" earlier this year.
>>212228268M3GAN is hilarious, eat my fuck.
>>212228982I want to get back into it. I used to watch anime fairly regularly until 2015; since then, I just read manga a few times a year.
Lain is great. Watch Kaiji if you want a really entertaining and unique gambling anime with social commentary.
>>212230320Sarah Gadon watches American Graffiti every summer. Amsterdam she once stated that if she could live in any movie it would be American Graffiti.
>>212231972Just make a USSR category.
>>212232501I can do that, so it will be
>Eastern EuropeArmenia
Azerbaijan
Belarus
Estonia
Georgia
Kazakhstan
Kyrgyzstan
Latvia
Lithuania
Moldova
Russia
Tajikistan
Turkmenistan
Ukraine
Uzbekistan
>Central EuropeCzech Republic
East Germany
Hungary
Poland
Slovakia
>>212233325that makes it more complicated imo, because then does someone like Sokurov go under USSR or Russia? what about Balabanov? and shouldn't someone like Abuladze be counted as a Georgian director even though all his films were made in the USSR?
>>212233702Nice.
>>212233315>Amsterdam she once stated that if she could live in any movie it would be American Graffiti.>Amsterdam

>>212232009Only two years older than Dominique Labourier (b. 1943)
>>212228982Anime sucks although Lain is an exception. It still has some cringey anime mannerisms, but between the plot complexity and certain aesthetic elements it's definitely worth giving a go imo.

How are we not on a new thread yet?
>>212236701Threads have been lasting a day and a half lately.
>>212236701kdg is faster than us now it's over
>>212236767I'd much rather have slow threads than endless arguing about whose waifu is better or anons needlessly dumping pictures of mediocre looking actresses
>>212236767How do you know that? If you're using kdg you're not "us", you're "them" you phony, you don't belong here, leave before i kick you out.
>>212236767Good, go back and stay there.
>>212237049do you have the webm from either a Japanese or Korean movie/tv show where a woman is at a job interview or something and asked her hobbies, which she responds with something along the lines of "I like to watch movies", and then the other lady responds with "Isn't that the same as having no hobby at all"?
>>212236908>anons needlessly dumping pictures of mediocre looking actressesYeah the Chika Araki spam has gotten a little out of hand lately.
>>212237255it's from the show Tokyo Girl you can find a torrent for it in the kdrama general shows pastebin
>>212218611It's not even remotely close to The Thing. The Thing is a phenomenal work of suspense and imagination, Halloween is just some dumb high school girls being goofy and then a girl who is able to fend off a killer in the most predictable fashion that makes the final 30 minutes of the movie a chore, and the entire suburban cult thing was literally developed more in The Ward even though it looks like every low-tier horror movie of the 2010s, but it is an interesting story.
Literally everything from The Ward to Wild Things to It Follows (bad) has already done the same thing as Halloween while being less of a slog.
>>212218123Lovely Molly, Altered, and Seventh Moon are all very good. Exists is okay.
>>212218276As if Halloween didn't birth elevated A24 metaphorical Horor. The Badadook, Hereditary, It Follows, Get Out are all just new versions of Halloween. The only movies to ripoff Blair Witch are Lovely Molly (same director and better) and Paranormal Activity (decent) and Cloverfield (terrible).
>>212237761I disagree.
BWP was the trope codifier to an entire genre of (mostly) crappy movies: Found Footage Horror.
The Blair Witch Project is actually the greatest movie ever made. You may disagree but there are objective reasons why this is the case.
>>212237976I agree.
BWP was the trope codifier to an entire genre of (mostly) terrific movies: Found Footage Horror.
>>212220573>something funny is posted>it's assumed that I posted itI'm flattered.
Speaking of flattering, I saw a copy of Monella and Soldier Blue in a dvd/bluray store today. I was surprised after just browsing through shelves and shelves of normal movies.
