The amount of ridiculous backstory they've grafted onto TOS by now is so ridiculous that it's become hilarious. Also, real answer, even ignoring the lore issues it is quite literally just a chick-flick version of Star Trek. I can't explain this unless you watch the show. Half the episodes are written for teenage girls.

I watched a little bit of std and picard, not getting meme'd into watching any more nutrek.

Overall the show just felt lazy and I'm utterly exhausted with TOS-era shows.

Yeah that's one of the most egregious things how they purposely shit on the lore so they can add things like sex scenes and soap opera shit. Also Pike casually fucks that other female captain who arrested Number One. It wouldn't be so bad if they limited the casual sex to one character (not spock) in one episode.

For me the absolute worst thing about it is the Gorn retcon where they went from being lethargic walking dinosaurs to xenomorphs who breed inside other aliens. And they killed off one of the few good characters that way, the Andorian engineer guy, just so they could bring on Carol Kane. It made me physically angry when I saw it.

I personally didn't think it was incredibly bad but that's more of a compared to the direction the franchise had been going this was somewhat of a course correction. What I didn't like is/are all the *wink wink to "future" TOS shit. I like Uhura as a character and an actress but fuck she shouldn't have been on the show. Kirk showing up. Ultimately it just kept refusing to stand on it's on. KAHN! They have a fucking Kahn episode. It like many other prequel shows just kind of refuses to stand on it's own 2 feet and instead leans heavily on nostalgia bait. Now that I think about it T'Pring shows up. It was just copy after copy or reference after reference TOS. And it went from "Oh I get that reference" to Pikes "fate" being an entire subplot and then with Something like Spocks marriage where in my opinion you're taking the incredibly long life cycle of a Vulcan and jamming the complexity of their union and it's disappointments into a few years, relatively, along the Star Trek timeline.

It had a few solid episodes but ultimately refused and I mean refused, they did not want, would not let it stand on it's own merits. And that made the mistakes they made which most if not all shows do even more glaring.

Roughly the equivalent of one season of TNG. Netflix did the same thing with Witcher; they gave them a pity season to wrap things up and then canceled the show.
Strange New Worlds got canceled with FEWER episodes than just TWO seasons of TNG. Fewer episodes than DISCOVERY, fewer episodes than LEZZIE DYKES, fewer episodes than ENTERPRISE, and fewer episodes than TOS, the show SNW is trying to rip off. It got canceled with the same amount of episodes as PRODIGY, NuTrek's biggest failure.
